The more I think about it

  • The ACC should just stay the course. I know there is still a feeling amongst some that Notre Dame will always remain independent, but that's really starting to become impractical, and their AD has been hinting at as much. One of the criteria that the selection committee will be looking for when selecting the participants for this new four team playoff is whether or not a school is a conference champion. That isn't the only thing they'll be looking at, but obviously it puts independent schools behind the 8 ball. The ACC still has Maryland for next season, so there's no need to do anything right now. I am more than confident that if Notre Dame can be convinced to come on board by 2014, then this will all be over. Time for these presidents to use a little foresight and prey in the vulnerability of the Irish.

  • I say give ND a deadline to go all in. If they say no, then tell them to go **** up a rope. I hate ND and they cause a lot of this stuff. They are like the deadbeat uncle who lives his whole life bumming off of other family members. Quite honestly I am sick of it, and they offer nothing to us so long as they continue to play the role of a needy crackhead hooker.

    Oh I almost forgot, ND can take that goofy leprechuan with them too.

  • I don't think you can ever tell Notre Dame to go pound salt. It's pretty easy to see what happened here. The Big 10 has been holding out for Notre Dame for years. If I'm not mistaken, it was pretty much an open secret that the only way that they'd expand beyond 12 schools was if Notre Dame was part of the deal. Well when Notre Dame joined the ACC, and assured the ACC that if/when they join a conference that the ACC would be the choice, the Big 10 was left at the altar. So, the Big 10 went with Plan B. Now, I don't think the ACC or Notre Dame thought things would move this quickly, but they have and it's time. Notre Dame is going to have to join a conference in the very near future, probably within the next five years because of the new playoff system. The presidents who presided over the institution of this system want their conferences represented in a playoff, not independents like Notre Dame, which is why whether or not you won a conference championship will be a major criteria for admission. It's up to John Swofford to make them realize this, and if he isn't trying then that will be extremely disappointing to me because adding them to football will secure the safety of the ACC forever.

    I beginning to think that way too. I don't see UL or UConn adding an ounce more $, prestige or stability to the ACC. Stick at 13/14.

    More importantly than ND joining is keeping Fla State from leaving.

    Why do I preach Navy to the ACC? It will give ND more out of conference opportunities. The fact that ND has gone undefeated this year has put any joining of a conference on hold for awhile.

  • Stay as is with 14 including ND.

    Split into two 7-team divisions including ND in one.

    The membership of these divisions would be rotated somewhat regularly. Each division obviously plays 6-division games. Only the individual division record counts towards a division championship and ACC Championship game birth.

    In this system, ND can play a full ACC divisional schedule with 6 games, only one more than they are currently required to. The remainder of the conference has two cross-over division games (including a primary and secondary protected rivalry if they schools aren't in the same division during a particular season) that don't count in the division record, but work as a tiebreaker if two division teams are tied. In the event ND is tied, BCS standings are used.

    This leaves ND 6 open spots on their schedule to allow them to play USC, Navy, Stanford, Purdue, MSU and whomever else they want. Let them keep their NBC contract for their home games.

    Would ND bite for a shot at a conference championship and additional Orange Bowl births by adding only one more ACC game?

    Are you saying Notre Dame in the above scenario being a full time member of the ACC? Well hell yes. Adding Navy would also eliminate the the OOC opponent problem. But who else to make up a super conference? psu?

    I hate conference shuffle threads, but this site is not ridiculous on it like the others and people here have had level heads about it.

    So on that note, you are right. If, IF, we are headed for these 4 16 team Superconferences as has been predicted, ND is not going to have a choice. So....they might as well protect their own East Coast interests, or the Rutgers/Maryland moves were designed for that very East Coast idea.....to when it comes time to push or shove...they are forcing ND's hand.

    Oh and one other note. While we Pitt fans fret, at least in the first part of the Rutgers/Maryland move, you know who is the biggest loser? Penn State. They recruit both areas hard. Now they can't sell the Big 10 to recruits in Jersey and Maryland as the difference maker.

  • Thus the Navy, psu, and Notre Dame's invites to the ACC. It all works out. Nd has their rival games in conference and enough space to play the OOC rival games.

    I don't think so. Rutgers has already talked about moving games into the Meadowlands and Yankee Stadium, which I'm sure is where they'll play PSU. And don't put it past UMD to play games in RFK. That's big for PSU. PSU is going to be pushing their brand even harder in the beltway and NYC, and that makes me sick, actually. This is great news for PSU overall, and especially PSU basketball. I don't think it will have a substantial impact on their recruiting of NJ or MD since RU and UMD are vastly inferior football programs.
