Taylor, birch, Adams?

  • How can cal take 5 star players and get to final fours and every highly ranked guy we pluck couldn't throw a hot dog through a hallway?

    Wh4p

  • Cal loads up, across the board. We also know there's a lot of smoke from all the programs Cal has been at. Pitt hasn't gotten anywhere near the boatloads of talent he has brought in.

Taylor been hurt a lot of his career, but it isn't his fault he was so hyped, but he is just a solid big man role player. Birch had a 2 cent head, and rumors are he left for some payday too. It is waaaay to early to talk about Adams. This was the first big game for him against a legit opponent. He still looks lost out there and he'll have to get used the speed of major college ball. It'll take some time. We are only five games into the season and this was the first time he's seen legit big men. Look for the improvement by March. But really, like other sports, the biggest improvement is from year one to two.

  • I agree way to early to talk trash about him. He has been disappointing so far this year though. He is going to improve it will just take game experience and practice.

I think you're over reacting here my friend.

Your comparing guys like Dante to cant miss prospects like Davis. First off if you look at Dante. He's not near as athletic or talented as he was hyped. As paco said not his fault.

Paco nailed birch so j have nothing to add there

As far as Adams goes. IMO he has all the athleticism you want but if you watched any of his games last year you could see his game was very raw. He has no back to the basket game at all and will need time to develop. He also is adjusting to the speed and athleticism of the us game. This kid will improve greatly this season as he gains the feel for the game.

Th other problem is he was also over hyped. Not like Dante who lacks physical tools. But people looked at Adams athleticism an predictted one and done. He's not close because he's so raw. Not his fault everyone overhyped him

Now jrob is the real deal

Good post Paco...Adams definitely needs more years at this level before he makes his next step.

  • Nick I think you are overreacting. All I said was we continuously get top ranked players who are offensively challenged. I don't know how that can be disputed. I also didn't "talk trash" about anyone. The continued hyperbole when someone expresses a differing opinion is kinda annoying.

    Wh4p

  • I'm surprised Dixon starts Adams. Does he deserve to start, really?

Now, the non-conf scheduling kinda makes sense. He's going to need the work. When I saw that stiff from Oakland score at will on him - that was trouble.

    BlackMan154940

  • Prez. Where did I say you talked trash? Also I was simply countering your opinion with an alternate view. Relax my man.

One other point. BIgs generally don't have refined offensive games coming out of hs. It takes them time to develop their game. If you're using UKs bugs as a point if reference those kids are the exception rather than the rule

  • i knew this would happen. as soon as i saw last year go down the gutter i said that the expectations for adams would be ridiculously and unfairly high. people want him to be a star as they do everyone but hes been a solid center as a true freshman and his potential is through the roof. first off, michigan was a bad matchup for him. they were small and quick. secondly, he still needs to adjust to the physicality of american ball. once he does hell be just fine.

almost all big men are offensively challenged as freshman..... they dont need skill in high school because theyre bigger faster stronger and more athletic than everyone they play

    Shady1

  • Yeah... he has potential out the ass. He's going to be a good one - I just hope it's at Pitt.

    BlackMan154940

  • Nick you didnt say I talked trash, the poster below your post did. I should have changed paragraphs to show I was talking about two different posters.

  • The answer is simple, Cal gets better recruits. The best of the best every year.

It doesn't hurt that he's a heck of a coach too.

Pitt is lucky to get one top guy. Cal gets 4 or 5 every year so his margin for error is greater.

    GibsoniaPanther

  • If cal had Steven Adams he would be better. If pitino got jj Moore he would be in the NBA. Dixon is a very good college bball coach but kids don't progress offensively. Its team first approach wins a lot of regular season games but doesnt tend to let your offensive game flourish. I think thats what tray Woodall alluded to earlier in the week.

Also Adams ate up Noel on two different occasions last year.

YOU ARE RIGHT IN IN THAT PITT IS AND HAS BEEN FOR TOO LONG , WITH A VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS LACKING ON OFFENSE. But that is how Jamie recruits, he is all about defense and if offense happens , so much the better, the primary reason Pitt does poorly in the NCAA tournament is because of a lack of offensive talent. With Pitt going to the ACC the mind set better change or Pitt better get a better , brighter staff. With better recruiting.

I agree with this but I also agree with prez in that JD a system is a but too restrictive and doesn't allow for a kid to create on his own as much as perhaps you see in cals system. I do think that impacts kids growth and confidence a bit. Hard to say though how much better Adams or JJ would be in different systems that's speculation

Adams will be the 5 star player everyone expects , as indicated he ate up Noel twice. Watching Adams play now it appears he is thinking a lot about his role within the offensive and defensive schemes Pitt plays rather than his actions being second nature. Once he is comfortable with the systems he will revert back to the star player we expected to see. During this non-conference season Pitt needs to get Adams more involved in the offense to benefit Pitt in the Big East.

I think one reason it appears JD's players don't progress offensively, is almost all of his players have a major hole in their game when they come in. I don't think he's ever had a complete offensive player, a guy who has a handle, jumper, and can create his own shot.

But, I've seen guys improve offensively under JD. You can't tell me that guys like Chevy and Sam didn't improve under Jamie's watch.

  • It would be dumb to say players don't improve under Jamie. That's why I didnt say that. Players don't flourish offensively with the exception of sam young. Which, no coincidence was our best team. Chevy troutman outworked opponents his offensive game was minimal.

    Wh4p

  • How about Aaron Gray? He improved tremendously. Adams as a frosh has a better physique than Gray had who was initially, a blob. Otherwise, when I look at Adams I feel like I'm looking at freshman Gray.

JRob. May be the most complete player JD has had. The kid is flat out impressive

  • Nick, as my brother: I've started on the libations for Thanksgiving. At 64, if we ever meet, I'm gonna post you up and f--k you up. Get us a court. Black Man and Pappy are also invited. Sight unseen, if we get a two on two game you'll be teaming with Pappy. I'll take my chances.

  • Pap was pretty decent at bball actually. He could jump...is 5ft 10 and could dunk. He was an outstanding baseball player though. No shit, I still run into people who tell me he was good enough to get a shot at the bigs. He also once was kicked out of a charity bbal tournament for elbowing a female cheerleader.

Last part is false but the rest is true.
