QB situation - Pitt vs. PSU

  • When you think about Pitt's QB situation and feel bad, thinking about PSU's situation should make you feel better.

Coach O'Brien said that they only opened up 10% of the playbook, and all 3 of their QB's were still horrific all Spring and at yesterday's Spring Game.

    - Bolden - 7-14 for 78 yds, 0 TD and 3 INT's

    - Jones - 6-15 for 113 yds, 1 TD and 1 INT (and most of his yds came from a busted play / scramble where he heaved it up and an offensive player came down with it)

    - McGloin - 6-13 for 105 yds, 1 TD and 1 INT

Cory Giger of the Altoona Mirror tweeted: The biggest change in PSU's offense is "quarterback is in total control" and will audible a lot, Matt McGloin said. confused

  • P.S. Apparently Bill Belton, a former Pitt commit, was switched from WR to RB for PSU and looked good yesterday. That sucks lol.

  • So 19 of 42 for 196 yards 2 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Those are Tiny's numbers for crying out loud.

O'Brien will be cheating his butt off in a couple of years. If there's still a football program up there.

  • I go to school with a die big penn state fan and when he heard me complaining about tino last year, he said that he would welcome tino to psu with open arms. The qbs there are absolutely terrible.

  • Die hard my bad

  • We had a pretty rough go of it yesterday with the QBs.

Paul Jones is the only guy with any potential, because Bolden got so screwed up by Jay Pa's coaching and regressed unbelievably.

Paul Jones is huge, and has a cannon. He looks REALLY good about 65-17% of the time, but the rest of the time he makes you scratch your head. Just isn't there yet unfortunately.

McGloin sucks 85% of the time, but 15% of the time he looks even worse.

We'll rely heavily on Silas and hopefully Belton comes up with some big runs for us. We need some more playmakers on offense, because we ask a lot of Silas to carry the ball 28 times a game.

‏@Cordale10 Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS

Haha, yeah, I was there and it was pretty bad.

Its weird, because on the last drive of the game he covered a decent amount of field, stayed strong in the pocket, read the defense well, checked down and everything. He scored on that drive. And then there was the INT throw and the guy he missed deep, which was thrown to the wrong shoulder in addition to being five or six yards too far, and you just shake your head.

McGloin is terrible, but because he's consistently terrible he may win the job by default. Very frustrating.

No LOL after your last post? O'Brien comes from the biggest cheating factory in NFL history for one. Bilacheat sucked in Cleveland but is a genius in Beantown. Hmmm? Fairly crafty I would say.

The little stir up at ups is going to grow like a fungus no one has ever seen before. The Pa governor may out before this is all over. A dead DA in 2005 you say? Hmmm? Fairly stupid I would say.

    I'm not stupid, actually.

Once again, just talking football, there is no need for the attacks. I haven't talked any smack since I've been here.

In terms of BOB, I'll be shocked if he is here for longer than 3 years, so I'm not sure if he'll have much of an opportunity to do anything shady, especially with federal investigators poking around and the NCAA looking for a reason to hit us.

Interesting Tx Lion...why do you think he will be there less than 3 years?

We weren't his first choice, he wanted an NFL job more than anything. Once Jacksonville dropped him, he took our position because we were the only other HC opportunity he had at the time. He also wasn't our first choice as a HC, and was more of a contingency plan for if other candidates fell through. Joyner put is in a really bad spot because he was too stubborn in contract negotiations, so we hired O'Brien because he burned bridges with every other candidate we had higher. Because of this, I don't think he will have a long leash in terms of failure.

If he is successful, I think he will leave for the first NFL job that comes and offers. If he isn't successful, he'll be here to ride out the storm from the scandal and the administration will fire him and go back to try to hire a better coach. If he is average I still think he doesn't come back, because we will move on to other coaches.

I don't know how successful he will be, honestly, but the opportunity is certainly there. Our division is the weaker of the two in the B1G, and Wisconsin is going back down now that they lost Chryst and their great QB. We'll just have to see how quickly the OLine improves and whether or not Roof can keep up the defensive success that Bradley established.

  • I noticed that PSU doesn't play Michigan or Mich State this year...how did you manage that?

    signature image signature image

    BurghGuy68

  • No idea, but I'll take it. biggrin

I'm pissed though, because I will only get one OSU home game in my time at PSU, unless I stick around for grad school. Better for the team though, I think Michigan would beat us by 14-28 points, and Michigan State is nothing to sneeze at either. Damn good teams in the B1G, the conference is really starting to come around.

EDIT: To answer your question though, when the B1G was redoing the schedules to incorporate Nebraska they had to change everything up. Amazing how one more conference opponent throws everything off.

Ill be honest, i didnt pay attention to your coaching search closely other than seeing some absurd rumor about nick saban. Who were you guys targeting?

  • Ehh, it was hard to evaluate Paul Jones yesterday. It was pretty windy & that affected at least two of his pass attempts. Honestly the offensive line is what worries me the most. I don't remember too many snaps when any of the QBs had time to set up & throw a quality pass. Hard to complete passes when you're running for your life, which seemed like what was happening every snap.

...I really hope Jones turns out because if I have to go through another year of McGloin or Bolden I might have a stroke

Pitt fans: be thankful for what you have in Tino because McGloin & Bolden have been abysmal for the past 2 years... overall they had their moments, but have just not worked out as long term solutions

  • I'm actually very impressed with O'Brien. I think he's doing a great job for a lame duck college. I just can't understand how to be honest. What parent would sign off on their kid going up there right now. Puzzling.

    waltspappy

  • There is nothing really solid out there, mostly message board fodder.

Nick Saban was bull, but some people got desperate because it took so long. Apparently Stoops was interested, but it would have taken a lot of money to pull him out of Norman, and realistically OU is a much better situation for a coach like him anyway. Al Golden called and would've come if we offered, but the administration wanted a clean break from Joe and the old regime. There was actually some fire to the smoke that was Urban Meyer, but the scandal squashed any chances of that and IMO we were always second behind OSU in that race. My personal favorite (realistic) choice was Dan Mullen from Mississippi State, but Dave Joyner thought he could do better so he told him to stuff it.

Supposedly, Gruden came extremely close to happening, but he wanted some out clause to coach the Eagles if the job came open. Once that talk fell through, Joyner had burnt most other bridges with the candidates. So he signed O'Brien.

I'm meh about it, could have been worse, could have been better.

He has done a great job so far, and the staff as a whole has worked very hard.
