Ponying up..

  • If PITT pony's up and gives Chryst some extra cash to have him stay than I'm going to be impressed and happy. We need to take a risk and be proactive if we already haven't.

    A. It shows Chryst we are behind him and PITT's vision of winning is one he can have faith in.

    B. It shows recruits, HS coaches, fans, media, etc that this isn't the same old PITT.

The greatest men who left the biggest impacts were the ones who made calculated risks.

  • Agreed but more than that they need to pony up some additional cash for his staff.

I was fortunate to bump into one of Pitts better DBs who had a nice career in the League today and his comment was Pitts problem has been lack of stability at the HC position. And he wasnt just talking about the last few years but dating back to Godfried We need to support PC and be patient with him to restore some stability to the program.

However it's done through him or his staff shows commitment.

  • Every other coach who has a school sniffing around at him has their current school pony up and make them feel secure.....Pitt on the other hand.....ya still waiting

  • That Ole Miss team we're playing took care of Hugh Freeze, et. al., on Monday. They waited one day after getting a bowl bid and he is the same profile. First year guy at 6/6. We're still waiting. The admin obviously is not comfortable with competing in this game. Not saying they won't do something but it's a struggle with them being committed.

  • What exactly did he do to deserve a raise? I cant imagine more money would be the reason he would stay at Pitt instead of taking the job at home. Of course this is a non-issue until Wisconsin actually offers him the job which more than likely not happen.

I agree completely. If he leaves, it won't be because of money & in that scenario, I don't think Pitt could produce a figure big enough to entice him to stay.

  • Firing Pederson would free up a lot of cash. $600K / yr is simply being wasted on a underperforming AD. Spend some of it on assistants and hire a new AD for a lot less.

  • Its a strange time to be giving a 6-6 coach a raise at Pitt. Things aren't too great financially right now and the athletic dept. is a mess and even an influx of ACC money won't fix it. As others have said, Chryst to Wiscy is not a money issue.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that we get full ACC money on our way in, right? Like, the first year is something less than what the other members make, then it's bumped up the next year, and so on, for some number of years, until you get to full payout. I may be wrong.

The point being: it may be the case that we don't get the full windfall next year.

We do not. We get phased in during an unknown number of years. For the Big Ten and B12 additions, it is something like 5 years or so. And like all conference media contracts, it is backloaded towards the end of the contract so it isn't the big numbers you see being thrown around up front...those are averages. Plus, the exit fees from the BE get taken out of what we receive from them this year. Irregardless, Chryst leaving wouldn't have anything to do with money.

  • I agree but again, we can fire an overpaid AD and spend that money on Chryst and his assts. Hire a new (cheaper) AD that people will respond to and in the processs - free up some capital.

  • Here is an idea - all the armchair QB's that do not show up and support the program can start holding up their end of the bargain as well.

Spending the 600k more wisely is a good idea as well.

  • be mediocre and get a raise, when you're getting paid over a mil/year. yes, we all picked the wrong profession.

  • Ain't that the truth... a guy like Paul Hackett who made a career of wrecking programs should be living in cardboard box under the parkway west.

Imagine being a major league hitter. Being successful 25% of the time can ink you some nice coin.

  • Unless the university likes what they have seen from PC so far and are willing to pay to keep him. If i knew I had a hot shot young coach that others would be after, I would give him a raise to show him you want him and keep others away.
