Paul Chryst statement

  • “I understand the speculation surrounding my name given today’s developments. I am committed to the Pitt football program and the University of Pittsburgh. I am focusing all my time and energy on our team’s bowl game preparation and recruiting a great group of young men to join our program and this outstanding university. We are working hard every day to re-establish this program and I am excited about the future of Pitt football.”

  • Am I reading too much into the statement in that it seems like an "All the President's Men" non-denial denial. I guess I was looking for a more definitive statement saying I am not going anywhere.

  • Seems the reaction to this statement is (shockingly) split. Half the people are thrilled, the other half is convinced this is proof he's leaving.

yes you are but its not surprising given how many scum bags have used the same type of statement and bolted days or weeks later.

  • He said "i am committed to the university of pittsburgh". That sounds to me like hes staying. Plus luke maclean said he talked with coaches and chryst is staying

  • As I said I think this will definitely work out in PItts favor as PC will be able to walk the talk when it comes to loyalty and committment. Ironically, Pitt will be thankful Brett B bolted.

  • What do you expect from this fragile fanbase considering the past 2 offseasons?

  • Nick - I hope you are 100% correct because I think PC can do great things at Pitt.

Everything coming out, official and non-official, strongly suggests that he is staying. I'd have to say all signs point to Pitt keeping its coach.

Word is year one of his buyout is $18 million. If that is true, he ain't going nowheres, even if he wanted to.

PItt has stability. Wisconsin's job isn't opening back for a while. This seems to be great news for Pitt.

  • Thanks Paco. I really wasn't worried about this after finally connecting to the one good source I have left out there. I just hope that the buy out wasn't what kept him here. I'll just leave it at that.

He IS full steam ahead. That's a very careful statement and not the usual non denial denial.

They really need to wake up on some funding aspects with program though, especially the staff. And the alums, especially, should be sending a message to take care of him and this staff.

Otherwise, on to Birmingham! LOL ....

  • The statement certainly could have been worded stronger. However, I don't think PC is scumbag so I doubt he would issue it unless he was staying.

    Good enough for me.

Well, he could have typed it in all caps.

  • I think it was strong but this is why coaches don't like to say anything. Exactly why. Whatever they say, no one will take it at face value.

Just hope that whoever Wisky hires, he's wildly successful or Chryst will be gone after another three seasons.

Chryst is not a wizard with words as was Pitt's last coach....I don't think Paul understands that he has left open some wiggle room, I think he feels he has shut the door for the time being with this statement.

I think it sounds like Paul Chryst. He's not really known for emphatic statements.

If word is correct that Alvarez knew about this for 2 weeks, than so did Chryst.

I think we went from Defcon 4 to Defcon 2, but not necessarily based on this statement alone.

I think your reaction is quite normal with all that Pitt has gone through in recent history. BUT Chryst has shown to be a no-nonsense person and I think we can take his word on this. Plus the recruits are all saying coaches are calling to say he is staying....if he were leaving that is not what he'd tell them. He'd say, "hang on a few days..."

  • This statement doesn't get made by Paul without his agent's advice (or writing it for him) and it doesn't get sent out by Pitt without their approval. So I don't think it's Paul Chryst speak. It was carefully worded for whatever reason.

I'm happy something was released because silence would have been worse. Agree with gregpitt though.

    True, all such statements are.

  • I think the situation at Pitt has made a ton of people really sensitive and like a scorned lover. No trust in the new guy because of what the old guy just did. I will take Chryst at his word as a fan

  • Its sad that in todays day and age, when someone says they are comitted to an institution that said statement is not sufficent to eliminate all doubt that they are not moving on. Not directing this at any of the posters who are not happy with PC's statement but rather the many prior examples that have lead people to conclude that a statement like this isnt strong enough.

In this case, when PC says he's comitted I have no doubts hes staying. Everyone can step back from the ledge. This will work out for PItt in the long run.

Nick's hit the nail on the head. We all have reason to be cynical, but boy, if there's still a guy that deserves some optimism, it seems like Paul Chryst is.
