PITT's All-Time Passing Numbers

  • Unless my math is off or the Internets is mistaken Tino Sunseri (8,405 yds) has moved past Tyler Palko (8,343 yds) into the #3 spot and trails Dan Marino (8,597 yds) in the All-Time Passing Yardage spot by 192 yards.

No one is going to touch Alex Van Pelt at the #1 spot with 11,267 yards.

In addition, with no INTs last night, Sunseri threw two INTs in 361 pass attempts for an astronomical 0.005 % rate. His INT:TD ratio this season is 0.105% - basically one INT for every 10 TDs.

In Russel Wilson's great SR year at Wisconsin he had a 0.012% INT rate. His INT:TD ratio was 0.121%

All kidding aside and as we know stats are just that, Tino Sunseri does deserve to be recognized for his production both this year and over his full career.

  • iMO, one of the new QBs (Voytik,, Chapman or Chanlder) will break Van Petls record. The game today is pass happy and its far easier to pile up passing stats..

Nick - they would have to start all four years and not miss many games to do it. Had Sunseri been a starter in 2009 and kept his average passing ypg at 244 he'd have topped Van Pelt.

That is a tough thing for any college QB to do and, looking back, I can't remember any QBs who have done so except Marino and Van Pelt. Maybe that kid who played at Texas and is now with the Browns.- Colt McCoy.

But I don't see any of the kids on roster now or being recruited whose going to get a straight four years.

  • ^^Another great point Reed. Either for the good or bad. Tino was durable. He definitely deserves credit for being there and improving this year.

I thought I saw PC yelling at Tino during the game on the sidelines.

    waltspappy

  • For sure they'd have to start four years but all could do just that.

But again given today's pass happy offenses its not that hard to average 244.

Here's an interesting observation. When will we have a back pass tony ds career yardage stats given how the run game has taken a back seat to the pass game. Moreover there doesn't seem to be the one back that gets all the carries any longer. The point is comparing stats from one era to another is very difficult because the game changes so much.

But I get your point. Tino has had a decent career stats wise

Although when your willing to take a 30 yard sack I guess your INT rate should be fairly low. That play was really bad and I think it was the one where HCPC and Tino were exchanging words on the sidelines afterwards.

    waltspappy

  • I don't think you'll see AVP or TD's records broke anytime soon. I don't think PC will run a pass happy offense, as his goal will be to have a balanced offense. And as for breaking TD's mark....not a chance with the limited lifetime if an NFL back. The kids will comtinue to leave after 3 yearsa to start the clock on their paychecks.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more conversation about that. First Sunseri takes that sack - then Chryst starts laying into him after Sunseri comes off the field, Sunseri looks off and rolls his eyes (sort of)... then a few seconds later Chryst was screaming and hauling ass down to where Sunseri was sitting.

It made me think that Sunseri was back talking and Chryst was having none of it.

    rkohberger

  • Do they keep stats on throwing yourself to the ground a yard or two short of the sticks, on 3rd down, in order to avoid contact? My guess is Tino would be #1 by a mile.

This is the epitome of why these stats mean nothing, It would be sacrilege to have his name in front of Marino.

When I posted these Sunseri stats the first time a few posters came back and said "It was a different era in football back then, teams passed less and ran more."

But in reality the facts show that Dan Marino threw more passes per game than Sunseri has yet Sunseri has a higher ypa rate. Sunseri's 7.57 ypa to Marino's 7.14 ypa. Marino beats him out with ypc in 12.4 to 11.7.

Kinda sheds a new light on Sunseri's 'dinking and dunking' only. Marino's completion rate was almost 7 points less than Sunseri's so that shows he hit more deeper passes but overall their completion and attempt rates are comparable.

Forget about TDs and INTs - Marino was like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde with those. He far surpassed Sunseri in TDs - 79 to 47. Then Sunseri turns around and bests Marino in INTs throw in 22 to 69.

I would never have though that coming off Sunseri's 2010 year he'd rack up so many positives statistically speaking.

    Thank you Steve Pederson!

LOL. Should I put it out there one more time? STATS, if tickled or tortured enough, they will confess. They are not worth the paper they are printed on. IMO!

I get what you mean about Marino and wholeheartedly agree. Even in front of Palko to a lesser extent.

It is just ironic that for as much heat as Sunseri has taken over the last three years he'll be near the top of the PITT charts.

  • Tino has put up great stats this year(just stats) and solid career stats. He's been very durable and has led the team to a bowl in each of his three years as a starter.

Does he deserve criticism? Yes, but at the same time he has been a better player than some give him credit for. He's had an overall decent career.

With the stats he has put up this year I am very excited about the future. First because we will likely see a QB without some of the issues Tino has under pressure, second because the playbook will be larger as the Chryst Era moves past year one, and third because I see the offensive line improving.

Defenses have changed Reed. You cant mug receivers like you used to be able to do. It was a much more violent game as well. Its hard to factor in all the differences..

Clearly no one is saying Tino could even hold Mario's jock. If Marino played on the same teams TIno played on in the same era, he'd have had incredible stats. Again it just proves stats dont tell the entire story especially when comparing players from one era to the next.

PLEASE ... have this PINNED somewhere .. this is all that needs to be said about Tino.

he literally falls down like he's been shot at the slightest hint of potential contact .. no matter where he is or how far his team needs him to go .. then you get the "war hero limp" off the field

his act is tired and the stats are meaningless

  • What does it mean if he gets an NFL camp invite? If NFL coaches think enough of him to give him a shot to prove himself, then does he still suck? Is he still not a D1 qb?

QB, Goalie, Starting pitching..... the 3 worst jobs in sports because that's all people like to point the finger at.

    PhPanther1

  • Sunseri's stats are meaningless. He's taken more sacks and cost Pitt more critical games than any Pitt QB in modern history.

Lets face it, his last 2 seasons sucked too in terms of Ws.

Just wait until he's named an All Big East QB in a week or so - lol.. And, he's going to get a camp invite as well..

Here's the thing, he is not the example of what you want when you go looking for HS QB's. But, most college QB's are not. He's got holes in his game (pocket presence, quick thinking) but there are so many things people on this and TOS have suggested that are just not true such as - height (he's not 5'11), arm strength (he's got a stronger arm than Stull, Bostick, Palko, etc), throwing on the run (he's actually fairly good at this when it's designed), etc.

The funny thing is last night was the 1st time I can remember Tino getting pass deflected, yet I've heard that it happens all the time over the past few years.

Please give a list of games where Tino was the sole reason for the sacks taken and what games those resulted in losses.

They don't have a record of sacks taken back in 02/03 but Rutherford lost more yardage in those 2 seasons than Tino has the past 2 years.

I refuse to argue with you cause all you'll say is it was the OL's fault. Its a dumb argument.

The Cuse game this year...deep in Cuse territory...in FG range...Sunseri takes the critical sack to push us out of FG range and thus lose the game.

The WVU game last year....2 minutes left....sacked repeatedly....and all we needed was to get into FG range.

I could go on and on....but you'll pull the lame OL fault crap WHEN NO....any decent QB gets rid of the rock and lives for another down.

    You gave me 2 examples.

I agree with the WVU game even though it was virtually impossible to see who was open downfield if you don't have coaches tape.

The Syracuse game saw 2 OT's get rented like a cheap suit for 4 quarters. I hope you're not using that game as an example.

This OL struggled last night in pass protection. I counted twice where the OL had miscues or was just beat and I counted twice where Tino made an error that resulted in a sack. Like I said in a thread last week, if you're going to start blaming sacks on people, it's fair to say that 50% have been on the OL and 50% on Tino. If we reduced our sacks by 50%, we'd be one of the better sacks allowed teams in the country.

Games we've lost over the past 2
    years -

    YSU
    Cincy
    'Cuse
    'Ville
    ND
    UCONN

    2011
    Iowa
    ND
    Rutgers
    Utah
Cincy (I don't remember this game for some reason)
    WVU
    SMU

Out of all those losses, I can honestly say Tino's lack of pocket presence probably cost us in only the WVU games. Many of those losses we got handled in different aspects of the game. Utah handled us up front on both sides of the LOS. Rutgers absolutely embarrassed our OL last year. UCONN smashed mouth our front 7 this year. SMU handled our OL, etc etc etc..

You don't want to blame the OL, but this also an OL that allows 6 TFL per game in the run game which is like 76th in the country. It's not like we've faced a ton talented front 7's this year. If one can't be fair in evaluating the entire offensive unit, they probably should give blame on anything.

  • Tino may get a camp invite but that would mean next to nothing. Every team has to bring in atleast one QB for no other reason than to be camp fodder. Thats 30+ kids getting warm-body time in NFL camps. When you throw in programs like Navy and the like that don't pass at all and underclassman, that means that nearly every QB that starts for any meaningful program for any length of time gets fed to the NFL camp gristmill.

Having said all that, his durability is to be respected. He was one tough player for us (physically). His Int rate is also amazing although, I think he's aware of it and consciously taking sacks and avoiding throws to keep it going to the detrement of the offense.

Hey, the kid is frustrating to watch at times but he has also been brilliant at times as well. Only an idiot would continually bash the kid without submitting that he has looked good on occassion. In several games this season he was better than the other teams QB. We could've done worse than to have him as our QB and if Savage doesn't pan out and we're stuck with a freshman, don't be surprised if the position isn't as good next season.
