OT: Justin Upton

  • Just read a good rumor that the buccos are REALLY high on him and trying to pull him in from the diamondbacks....
What do you guys feel about trading Taillon for him?

IMO, you make the trade. Cole is the ace of the future already in AA, along with future studs in Heredia and Appel. Back end rotation guys in McPherson, Locke, Owens... Taillon is a HS high end picther who is still in A ball, so he is no sur thing. Upton was 4th in the MVP race last year and is signed through 2015. McCutchen, Alvarez and Upton could be crushing the ball for the Pirates for the next 10 years. Marte and Bell could be the 3rd outfielder of the future as well. This team has talent ready to go. Nutting should be making calls to Cuban to see if he wants to jump in on ownership and help with payroll.

Kinda brings back memories of Bonda, Bonilla and Van Slyke with a LF/3B/CF combination.

  • ^^Typical pappy fashion. What he said. In a heartbeat.

  • I don't think I would do the Marte + Taillon for Upton, as teams will always shoot for the moon when asking for prospects. I would be more willing to add Robbie Grossman and one of the pitchers from India.

Also in reading, I was shocked to see some shortstop Alen Hanson ranked as a top 40 prospect by baseball america. I never heard of this guy and thought they bucs were dead as SS, but he seems to have some good numbers including 15 HR's, 22 stolen bases, .335 ave, 48 rbi's this year. Baseball America also said Gregory Polanco (never heard of him) and Heredia probably will be considered for next year to go along with Josh Bell and Mark Appel. Polanco and Hanson are both from the DR, so I never believe their ages listed....

  • I'd make that trade automatically. Guys in A don't mean anything, because they're so far away relatively.

Upton is a stud, and would fix the holes the Pirates have in the lineup through 2015.

  • Tallon is not enough to get Upton. They'll need to add anothe top prospect closer to the majors. The article said Marte alone wouldn't be enough to get Upton. So would you trade Marte and Tallon for Upton? Seems pretty steep. But Upton is an immediate upgrade and prove. Talent who's signed for a while. You have to give up something significant to get a guy.ike that

  • They only have one pitcher from India, and he's not even a real prospect. The other guy crapped out a while ago.

IMO Taillon is untouchable right now. I know he's still in A ball but he's your #2 pitching prospect. Pirates are winning with what they have now, and frankly I'd look for a SS before an OF. At least the scrubs in the OF are servicable major leaguers. Barmes is maybe the worst hitter in the league.

I know people are anxious to make a huge splash, but I don't know if I trade one year of winning (a year in which they're already winning, and winning big) for the potential loss of a #1 starter.

    Hail to Pitt.

  • Upton is a year older than Marte.

Yes yo do this deal. Look, the chances of all 4 (assuming they sign Appel) pitching studs work out is remote. Cole to me is the surest thing. Upton is signed through 2015.

It is these types of deals is why you stock your farm system with pitching.

  • The D-Backs are 4 games back at this point. They aren't trading Upton unless they get a huge return....which the Bucco's aren't going to give. Cole is the only untouchable IMO, and I bet Bucco management puts Heredia above Taillon.

Taillon - absolutely. Taillon and Marte - No.

  • The question I have is why on earth would Arizona want to deal Upton? He is young (24) and signed through 2015 & a proven major league hitter, so he would be the ideal player to rebuild around. Why would they trade him now? He's having a sub-par season, compared to last year. Is there something that the D-backs know (or suspect) that potential trade partners do not?

To me, this falls into the too-good-to-be-true category.

I dunno owt, it looks like Appel is thinking of going back to Stanford....

  • From reading, Upton's relationship with upper management in Arizona has turned sour and they believe that may be part of the reason his numbers have dropped. It's believed that they want a major league ready player back as part of the deal, which is why they want Marte also.

I don't see how this is a move for 1 year of winning. Why isn't the time for winning now? Last year they had a chance till the front office let them down and didn't bring in any bats. They're in the same situation again, lets see what upper management does. The idea of the 5 year plan needs to go away, you can't designate what year you'll compete in, sometimes it just comes out of nowhere and when it does, you jump on it.

4 games over .500, 1 game back of 1st place. Pitching once again carries team to all-star break.

Front office doesn't want to overpay in prospects or $$ and ends up with Derek Lee and Ryan Ludwick.

Yes and No. If you are an veteran team, and you want to take another shot at it then I agree with going for it, but The Pirates are in a tricky situation, they have a chance to be really good next year and for several other years down the road. Having seen Marte when he played for the Curve, he is going to be a very good player. I would say better then Upton.

I agree that the Pirates probably need to make a move or two, but they must also not mess with the team chemistry.

If you can get Upton without dealing Marte, then it may be worth the shot.

He's got an attitude problem apparently, or he and the DBacks are having disagreements on his approach to the game.

Hurdle has a solid handle on the locker room, and IMO could handle a guy like Upton and hopefully help him out. The guy is so unbelievably gifted, he just needs to get his mind right and the sky is the limit.

So they did bring in bats.

  • India is an untapped source of sports talent. Have you ever tried hitting a ball with#9 hot curry sauce on it? They also have a lot of really tall guys in a couple of provinces. Think Greg Oden with a brain.

lol if you consider these stats to be bats.... then ya i guess they brought in some serious power.
    .238 avg with 11hr's - Ludwick
    .246 avg with 12hr's - Lee
