OT: Anybody ever have a coach who said or did crazy stuff?

  • I'd love to hear any stories if they can come anywhere near the ones in the attached link:

I'm not sure if these are true or not, but I do think they're funny.

  • Our JV bball coach was "Unc" and the Varsity coach was Chuck D. I was on the JV team at the time. The varsity team had a big game right after and Unc was the Asst. varsity coach. Unc starts yelling at the official going off. Pretty much for no reason. The official T'd him up and said you need to cool down or else I am going to throw you out. I overheard Unc say throw me out of the damn game already I have to get ready for the Varsity game. Needless to say, he got tossed.

PS - We really did not have a coach the rest of the game. A volunteer coach took over.

  • I bet you could get lots of good stories at Penn State...didn't Uncle Joe once de-pants a guy? And we know about the antics of Uncle Jerry...

Maybe we could ask Larry Johnson or the LB coach that is there now?

  • A little unnecessary there BG.

My high school golf coach was a bit of a hardass, and didn't put up with much nonsense. I wasn't much of a partier in high school, was seen as the straight-edged kid on the team, but decided during the last semester of the season that I would take up dipping because I had heard it was fun. There was a strict no-tobacco rule, because the coach didn't want us to embarrass him at the public courses we played at so they wouldn't shut the team down. Anywho, on 18, a 415 Par 4, I was on the tee and hit a decent drive down the fairway. I bent down to pick up my tee, and spit before I came back up. I walked off the box and spit again. Put on my bag, after my teammates hit, and spit again.

Little did I know my coach was behind the tee box watching us from under a tree in the shade. He drove up in the cart, told me to swallow my pinch or he'd kick me off the golf team. I asked if he was serious, and he started to call my dad, which would have meant a sudden end to my life whenever I got home. I swallowed the pinch, immediately gagged, and threw up behind the cart. The coach then took my golf bag and told me to bearcrawl the rest of the hole.

We had a good team, and I actually really liked the coach, but he was a bit crazy. I don't think that stuff would fly anywhere but Texas.

  • For some of you older guys out there. Ever hear of Moe Becker? One of the Iron Dukes. I think he grew up in Braddock or coached there originally.

When this guy coached at Greensburg Salem he was a hoot. When he got mad he'd kick the back of the stands and wouldn't give the ball back to the refs on many occasions.

The man was well known throughout WPA. Opposing fans would often wave white handkerchiefs during his rants. Great man though and very generous.

  • pee-wee football. we had two kids who were a little...hmm...how to say...less than tough. They screwed up at the end of one practice. the head coach left early that day. the ass't coach made the two kids run a lap holding hands. we all laughed our butts off. they'd probably put that coach in jail if it happened today. good times.

  • There were stories out of Louisville when Kragthorpe was there that he put mousetraps in player's lockers, under clothes and stuff, reportedly to shake them up and keep them guessing... It didn't work and he of course is not at Louisville anymore...

  • My high school basketball coach who was a drunk, came into practice one night and told us to run until he was tired. He then went over to the bleachers laid down and went to sleep. It wasn't funny at the time because we ran for 2 hours until he woke up. Looking back now it's funny but he was a F'n jagoff.

No, it was reported in the papers that Paterno pulled down the pants of a recruit when he visiting and goofing around with that recruit while he was playing basketball. This was (obviously) several years ago now. I believe it was in the PG.

And people that are in denial about or are going to be sensitive about the Penn State Sex Abuse Scandal should probably stay off of other teams' message boards.

That said, when I was a student I started keeping quotes that Paul Evans made during practice. They were often as vulgar as they were hilarious. It was often hard for the part of the team that wasn't the target of his angst to keep a straight face. I wish I would have kept those quotes.
