Navy

  • would adding Navy to the ACC give any political influence to the conference w/ regards to "anything" - TV/Bowl/BCS/Playoffs/etc etc etc?????

  • I am going to jump before anyone else. No. No. Navy is not a player in college football they bring no cache. None at all. They may have tradition, pomp and circumstance, but if they did bring anything, they would have already been in the Big East or ACC.

This is completely Darwinistic (though short sighted) and it only is going to involve the power brokers and those in the power markets.

Luckily...however this shakes out, Pittsburgh is still a top 25 media market and that may save our arse in the end.

Pittsburgh is in a top 25 media market that is already covered by PSU and WVU. Again, you don't have to be top dog in the market. So I wouldn't feel completely safe.

Navy brings more than pomp and circumstance. It is one of the most popular teams in the US. It is close about as close to a national team as you can get outside Notre Dame. If it had any possibility of being competitive in basketball, it probably would be in a major conference already. The BE tried to get them in for football-only years ago but Navy didn't want to move. That has changed recently. It brings the exact same home market as Maryland does, and is probably just about as competitive these days. I can think of worse moves than having Navy as a football-only affiliate. Really, there just aren't great moves left.

I don't think the ACC is considering that move though.

  • I was thinking along the lines of how Baylor has some clout in Texas and they supposedly were able to influence Texas in staying in the B12. I was wondering if Navy has any connections politically that could force hands in this whole conference hoopla?

They probably do have some political clout though I'm not sure how much it would help, considering they are basically on the outside as it stands now.

Anyway, the only way this could get any worse is for the federal government to step in.

That may be the case. I would have to think if Navy gets "in the inside" then moves that would cut them out might bring some wrath from the beltway, but who knows.

It can get worse than it is now? That's a depressing thought but one i don't believe. The government stepping in and making sure moves are made in the best interest of the stakeholders would be just fine by me. We're on the verge of destroying interest and commerce in some fairly important US markets/regions.

  • I posted 3 years ago, before the raids took place. That the big east should have brought in Navy and brought back BC. Notre Dame's natural rivals. Also Maryland has been looking to leave the ACC for years.

The big east and the ACC are one in the same, they both react instead of being proactive.

BE was never going to be able to bring back BC.

Explain how the ACC was reactionary in 2003 and 2011. There hasn't been a more proactive conference.

They raided the big east and made all those teams schitty. That was a proactive move? Ok I'll give you that. Let's talk in the now. PITT and Cuse and they lose Maryland. You can call that mess proactive if you want. I call it barely keeping your head above water. With the big wave heading right towards them.

  • I'd love Navy! The ACC needs only one thing, a team or two to become a yearly fixture in the National Championship race. FSU and VTech need to step it up. Navy is a perfect add. They won't challenge either of those schools. Teams like Pitt, Wake, NC State and GaTech are death to a conference. We never do anything positive we just ruin stuff for everyone else-LOL! I hope Pitt can break free of its shackles and be a relevant opponent for VaTech. You need a good dynamic amongst your teams.

You need the protagonist. The Mich's, Ohio States, Bama's and Florida's and such. They are the teams everyone watches because every game they play matters on the national scene and quite frankly, watching the best at anything always pays off.

You need a foil. The protagonist needs someone to fight against to get to the top. The foil is that nationally respected team that has the national media has circled on the calander as a team that could bring down the champ.

You need the supporting cast. Most teams in the conference need to sit back and know their role. Clean-up in OOC and compete with the other supporting folks in the din of background noise beneath the big boys. Don't get too crazy and do anything stupid like knock off the Protagonist or foil though. When a support knocks off one of the bigs, it brings them down to the level of the supporting cast not vice versa! If it happens too often, the national folks lose interest in the protagonist and the story (conference) altogether. See Big East.

Comic relief. You need to balance out the protagonist with the truely bad program(s) that can allow the supporting folks to be rewarded for knowing their place. The comic relief exists to get the support programs to bowl eligability. In turn, everyone in the conference lauds them for their academic greatness.

Navy, could be a good support program. FSU and VaTech are the protagonists. Clemson and hopefully Pitt could be the foils. Comic relief would be Duke and Wake Forest. Everyone else is in support.

Seriously I glossed over your post and can't tell if it's sarcasm or not. Navy, PITT, and BC, all three are natural rivals for ND.

Navy is by far the most popular Academy in the country and they have such a beautiful campus with a huge TV market. I'm not saying that Navy owns the market at all. They are nation wide though. They even have decent teams every now and again and a move to the ACC might just improve on that.

Pappy, all three of those are currently on Notre Dame's schedule, but Boston College didn't really begin playing Notre Dame until they both had Big East ties. They are not traditional rivals, but yes, they have played every year since '92.

they will. college sports is a business that makes a pile of dough. and right now, it's not being taxed. there's no way the ncaa school can call this non-profit and/or educational.

No sarcasm but sometimes my ramblings are so idiotic that people think I can't possibly be serious.

I'd love to see Navy in th ACC for all sports.
