Let the hysteria begin!!!

  • Let's see..... former players, current player, potential future players all like script. Most fans prefer script.

Marketing genius at Pitt.... nope, can't have it.

I don't believe Pitt is allowed to just throw a new uni out there for a bowl game.

I think this is just a gag or wishful thinking.

Ummm, isn't that what Oregon does every week?

    Courtesy of Scott McKillop.

    They look sick IMHO.

Maybe this is what Chryst meant:

"Coach Chryst already told us that he'd take care of us seniors if we make it," Shanahan said. "I don't know what that would entail, but I'm looking forward to it. So, we just need to go out with a win this week and see what happens with a bowl game."

I meant, you can't just wear a uni that hasn't been given the OK by the NCAA and that occurs well before the season. I don't know for certain. Another poster who seems pretty legit mentioned it a few years ago when rumors were swirling that Graham was going to switch to script for the opener. It was said that he wanted the switch but it was too late because the deadline for presenting uniform changes had passed. Oregon unveils their uniforms before the season and can use whatever they want from that selection as long as it is part of the pre-approved style.

Gotcha. Always a chance they have multiple uniforms approved already as well. Not that I would know, but not out of the question.

Nordy probably doesnt like the Pitt Script either. No other explanation how he let Stevie P completed F up a great brand like that.

  • CMF... he didn't screw up a great brand. Ask Paco and Ski .. Pitt and the script (even the stripes) are not nationally recognized so they're worthless .. seriously .. all we did was rip off the Florida Gators. And Pitt made a killing on the rebranding. It was sheer genius. Think about how much they'll make when they bring back the old uniforms. The tens of thousands of empty seats are well worth it. It's all part of the master plan.

Well then, there's somebody at the NCAA that I'm now pissed at for approving that torch cut Pittsburgh / Dinocat mess.

Full disclosure, I think the school's can wear whatever uni they choose.

Florida ripped off PITT. Pitt came out with the script in 1973. UF didn't do it until 1979. Check out the link.

Also, you are waaaaaaay wrong. Everyone nationally remembers the script & mustard and immediately recognizes it as PITT.

Brocephus .. i was being sarcastic .. but literally that's what Paco said. He said we ripped off Florida's script and their stripes. I will find the thread AGAIN if necessary.

  • Ok .. so i was partially mistaken. But here is the quote in response to my adoration for the old uniforms (apparently the stripes caused some distress):

"Stripes, good grief. While I like the stripes, you have to be joking to think that was some program defining element. By 1996, people outside Pennsylvania thought Pitt had ripped off Florida's uniforms and script "Gators". To the victors go the mindshare.

And people outside Western PA did not know what "Pitt" is... today or in the 90s. Sorry. Get outside of Western PA and talk to people that aren't major college sports fans. But in retrospect they should have never changed it, I agree, but unfortunately it isn't as universal recognized as Pitt fans think it was or is. That is also why they need to stop changing logos."

I was in Vegas and New Orleans in the last 2 months on Saturdays and everyone knew who PITT was. Knew we were Big East and heading to the ACC, etc. I got comments about Dorsett & Marino in the Sugar Bowls. I also got asked why we changed to ND colors and got rid of our cool uniforms.

That is a huge myth that people do not know who or what Pitt is. Granted, we have been mediocre for most of the 30 years, but we are still recognized and respected.

Yeah, people that know Dan Marino and the Sugar Bowl win over UGA aren't major college fans are they? People outside the message boards, outside of people that don't know about 25 year old bowl games, often don't know what "Pitt" is. I made that distinction clear time and time again: that I'm talking about the average Joe Schmoe not @MrSportsFan#1. "Pitt" is not entrenched in popular culture like a "UCLA" or "USC" or "MIT" or "Duke" or "Yale" or even "Michigan" or "Ohio State". It isn't. Go to a city and go outside on the street away from the sports bars and just ask people.

Why would anyone walk down a dark street in an unknown city and ask some heroin addict if he knows diddly squat about PITT or Wilmerding for that matter?

The sports bar patrons at least may shed some semblance of football knowledge. Maybe? There is more grey in Bama than you give them credit for. Seriously Paco.

Interesting you use the names Duke MIT, Yale, Michigan, UCLA, USC. Where's Stanford and Harvard to drive home your point?

This country is very big, this just in. It ain't the meat it's the motion. Motion = $$$$ times two.

  • I find that many people I encounter don't know what "Pitt" means. Since I am a Pitt fan, I talk about Pitt often; the common mistake is to think I refer to any team from Pittsburgh (Steelers, etc.) as "Pitt." I've gotten tired enough of that one that I've stopped correcting it.

Pitt (generally and by its nickname) is certainly a better known school than many (my current home comes to mind, as it has exactly zero Facebook street cred). But it's not a brand on par with any of those Paco rattled off---at least not nationally, in my own experience.

I'm not sure why you're lumping me in here, but I'll try and respond.

Age has become the most significant factor in determining what one thinks of when they think of the Pitt brand. As a relatively recent grad (2008), when I think of Pitt, I think of the Block Pitt. For the kids Pitt recruits, they'll think of Block Pitt, not the script. Yes, I know some recruits sports script gear in their twitter avatars, but I wonder if they'd do that were it not for some guy pushing it on them via twitter.

I DO think the Pitt Script brand is far less significant nationally than guys like Ghost want to admit. Paco is right. Outside of hard core sports fans, no one thinks of Dorsett, Marino, or Script Pitt. I'll be completely honest, I grew up in Pittsburgh and was a huge sports fan and never heard of Hugh Green until I started posting on Rivals. Now, living in the midwest, most people associate Pitt with their hoops team or when I specifically say the University of Pittsburgh. I've never had a conversation where someone brings up Marino or some bowl win from the 1980s.

Again, Paco is spot on. People inside Pittsburgh significantly overestimate the degree to which script Pitt and the success of the football team during a 10 year period is a known brand.

There's the rub. That's why Pitt's branding is a disaster. Pitt needs to stop crapping all over its die hard fans. I think folks like Nordy actually despise the true fans that pay the bills and want the branding to return to the Pitt script. They would prefer to be The U of Pittsburgh to all their egg head friends in Berkely and Cambridge. I love Pitt and I'm grateful for my fine education there but I'm starting to see way too much elitest snobbery from Pitt folks. I hate that garbage from PSU idiots and its no better from Pitt folks. I think thats a big reason for ripping off ND's colors and going with the more sophisticated block font and formal name.

Paco's specific observation is with respects the name "Pitt" not the either or script/ block design argument. This was part of Pedie's idea of branding with "Pittsburgh" which failed when he famously had to send a memo to the media telling them not use the nick name. Non college sports fans don't recognize the SCHOOL brand as they do an MIT, UCLA, etc. That was the observation. Pitt is a recognizable SPORTS name to college sports enthusiast.

Knowledgeable college football followers never fail to bring up the script and why don't we use it anymore. The anecdotal evidence is there so often it causes me to laugh. Such as when one of my clients, Pat Haden, brought it up at the Wilshire Club last month. You probably don't know him since you didn't know who Hugh Green was.

The last point, your dreamy love affair with a ten year old basketball tradition, whose greatest achievement is losing in a regional final is endearing. I'd say you don't know anyone over 30:). The reason why I say that is I have relations at the Dean level at Carolina, and they know Pitt, and don't consider us a hoops school (understanding what that really means ... see Carolina) which is what you would obviously like to sell as per your comments regarding what we are supposedly know for. I should say your usual comments. Not saying the achievements aren't recognized, they are.
