Koh SITREP - Practice on 3/27

    Reed,

I trust PC to make the choice based on who performs the best between now and thestart of the season, as it should be. My only two points are this:

    1. Tino will more than likley beat out MM fair and square because of his significant experience edge and because he is the ultimate practice player. However, I'd be willing to bet we see the same Tino esque turtle performance once the games start. The difference is that I dont think PC will hesitate to pull the plug and give MM a shot.

    2. I think theres a decent possibility that MM is rusty from inaction for two years. Heck he was pretty green when he came here. As a result, I look for his learning/improvement curve to be potentially steepper to the point where he may be at the very least pushing Tino very hard by the time summer camp ends.

In the final analysis, I trust PC to play the kid who gives Pitt the best chance to win. If its Tino so be it. I felt the same with Wanny. With Fraudy, not so much. Dude was freaking nutso!

Those are excellent points, but I'll add don't rule out that Sunseri may beat out Myers due to skill also. Myers has some real weaknesses in his game, as does Sunseri, but Sunseri actually does have talents as a passing QB contrary to popular beliefs.

It boils down to a few things...

We have no idea at this point what Chryst and Rudolph even want to see in a QB to lead their offense so a lot of these QB discussions are shooting in the dark. There are so many factors at play also, only halfway through Spring camp, new coaching staff and that impact on Myers and Sunseri, Voytik's ability to learn on the fly, etc.... that it's hard to predict what could happen between now and Sept. 1st.

One thing I won't do though is write off Sunseri as a QB who can't make progress going into his senior season. I think he has a lot of faults and I've been pretty critical of him, but you'd also have to be blind if you couldn't see that the offense he was asked to run and his porous offensive line didn't add to his problems last year.

I've said before that Sunseri had the 'yips' last season given all that the team and he went through. Sometimes a coaching change can really help with the mental and emotional part of the game that is so important to a QB's success.

I also disagree with fans who say Sunseri doesn't have physical talent, he sure does, but his shortcomings are so highly visible they tend to drown out the other, better aspects of his game. I'm referring to his deep passing obviously which is almost as important as any other aspect of a passing game.

Then we come around to your second point, how intransigent will Chryst be with the hook for the starter if he's not getting the job done? Wannstedt wasn't going to pull Sunseri for hell or high water even when he had a QB on the bench with some experience under his belt. Graham at least tried different options at QB to try to shake up both Sunseri and the offense.

How will Chryst approach this? If he tells the QBs that he won't hesitate to go a different direction at QB due to poor play then maybe that lights a more competitive fire under all three QBs going into camp.

I know I harp on this but when everyone and his brother knew that Sunseri was DW's golden boy and couldn't lose his job no matter what, that set the tone all around in some ways. IMO Chryst has to avoid that scenario at all costs and has to understand that some players don't shine until the spotlight is on them.

Who knows, maybe that is what Myers needs to produce...

  • I think the best thing that can happen is PC is very public about saying that Tino did not play well enough to lock down the starting position for the fall that the snaps would be 50/50. I hope MM does play well and pushes Tino to the max.

I agree with Nick, PC has no dog in this race, which is different than DW. I think Tino wins the starting role, but if he is faltering, I think PC gives him the hook. W's are more important than getting Tino to work through his issues in his 5th year as a Senior. If Tino was a Junior, he may be treated differently.

  • Way back when, the word was that Franco Harris was the worst practice player ever. Blow the whistle and boom. The dude kicked some ass.

Don't write off Mark Myers just yet. I don't think Tino brings enough to the table for PC. Just a guess.
