I agree would not trade Jamie for any coach in the country. Its times like this that you appreciate loyalty.

  • I love Jamie too, but in know way are there any parallels between his situation and that of the football team.

    1) Jamie is paid very well for what he does. Certainly in the top 10% of D1 basketball coaches.

    2) Jamie was handed a pretty good team that had turned the corner and was building momentum.

    3) Jamie has an awesome on campus facility that people go to.

It's easy for Jamie to be loyal.

    GibsoniaPanther

  • He's turned down Arizona State, TCU (his alma mater), NCSU, and so on...

He could have made more money, gone home, etc. He's stayed thru it all so far.

There is a lot of truth here. While can debate just how good Pitt's basketball program is, I think we all can agree that it's a better program relatively speaking than is the football program. Compared to other schools, Pitt does not lag behind as much in terms of money and facilities, etc.

  • Your missing my point Halvey. He's in a much different situation than the football coach.

Were any of those jobs better than the Pitt job?

I'll be honest the only job that really scared me and could be a sleeping giant is Oregon. Nike money and the west coast had to be tough to pass up.

  • I would agree with you about Oregon.

Jamie's got a pretty good gig. He seems to like it here, the people like him, etc.. But, if the right job and the right amount of money comes up.... I'm pretty sure he'll leave, and I wouldn't blame him one bit.

    GibsoniaPanther

  • Didn't Steve and the board OK the pay increases when AZ st and USC came snooping around? How come Steve and the boys are not getting a raise ready for PC?

    PhPanther1

  • TCU basketball? Is that even a serious concern? That'd be like Chryst being a Fresno State alum or Kirk Ferentz going back to UConn. Not relevant. I think the only serious temptation might have been Oregon.

He's got a great gig and probably knows it. An unsophisticated fan base that will always over blow what the team really does. There's little 'national' tradition. 'Hey, we're a 6 seed ... woo hoo!' He'd be a fool to step up in expectations. As long as he wins a lot of regular season games they'll keep him. He can build a legacy here and not even make a final four.

The only window that might open is when Nordenberg retires and Pederson gets replaced. It also explains where the last bastion of support for Steve Pederson resides. Not Jamie specifically but his minions.

Anyway, for a lot of these reasons, they should give him a life time deal.

  • I think are forgetting the MD job. His resources there would exceed PITT by quite a bit. 1000x better recruiting grounds, better facilities, loyal fans, much better tradtion, etc..

    Tap the brakes.

Playing in the ACC as opposed to the Big 10 is a big advantage in the ACC's favor. Kids in the DC Metro Area want to play for or against Duke, UNC, etc.

MD facility is larger, but not necessarily all that much better.

Over the past 10 years, overall Pitt has a better overall record. I will grant you the big feather of the Juan Dixon led title team.

MD fans are like Pitt fans. They support a winner. Let's be real.

I'm talking about 3-4 years ago when Jamie was offered. THere was no talk of the B10 back then for MD that was held in a serious conversation.

I'm also not talking about the success of either program. PITT has trumped them in virtually every measurable category post Juan Dixon era.

But, if you want to look at resources - Maryland will always kill PITT. You can go to any random gym from Poly to Dunbar to wherever and the caliber of play trumps WPA by a mile. It is like comparing WPA and PA wrestling to Maryland wrestling. Not to mention the D.C. area where the public's and private's are tremendous.

In terms of fan support - go check the data. Pitt has averaged around 11-12k for the past few years. Maryland who has been very average in that period has averaged between 15-18k. Maryland has generally been in the top 10 for average attendance for the past 5-6 years. Those haven't been a very good 5-6 years either.

In terms of facilities, they are better than ours in just about every sport. They were ranked #1 in the country a few years back. I love the Pete, it's very nice and it usually has an awesome atmosphere, but the Comcast Center is nicer in just about every way.

In terms of tradition, PITT is just beginning to build a great tradition. But, Maryland's basketball tradition is outstanding. John Lucas, Buck Williams, Albert King, Lenny Elmore, Len Bias, Stevie Francis, Joe Smith, Juan Dixon, etc are collegiate legends.

...Only those that haven't been to Oakland in over a decade.

Seriously, Maryland has more resources? That is one of the worst run athletic departments in the nation. Perhaps, the worst. Yow ran into the ground and they are in a financial mess. They also have no better facilities than Pitt. They do have a much better recruiting turf. But outside their 2001/2002 runs, after which they practically disappeared, they really don't have more tradition than Pitt and they certainly are not as consistent of a program. They don't have much more loyal fans, if that is even true. Certainly the Zoo is the more renown student section. There would have been no reason for Dixon to leave the program that he has largely built for Maryland.

I agree, Oregon was the only real threat because of Nike money.

Comcast is not nicer. It is bigger, but not nicer, IMHO.

Pitt also has nicer football facilities unless you are giving mega bonus points for being on-campus. They don't even have an indoor practice facility. Heinz+UPMC SPC blows what they have out of the water.

They have nicer olympic sports facilities mainly because Pitt doesn't have a track or tennis courts. Dixon doesn't coach those sports.

    Pitt has a nicer pool.

  • You're reaching with Maryland Steel. They were 22nd in attendance last year, averaged 13k in an arena that holds just under 18k.

Yeah, they have better tradition, but facilities, resources, and fans? I wouldn't be so sure. Also, how much does recruiting ground really matter in basketball?

I thought the Dixon to MD rumors were last year?

Maryland has really has no better tradition than PITT? Are you serious? They have doubled us up on sweet 16's, elite 8's, final fours, and national championships.. And, this is relevant history as well. Anyone who considers supremacy in college basketball before the black athlete was introduced has a distorted view of history. I'd love to see a poll ran by any major media outlet that features guys who've covered the sport on top what the national coaches former players think on tradition....

    How about NBA/ABA success?

In terms of student sections, PITT has had a loyal base for how long - 10 years? Maryland has been routinely known for having one of the best home court advantages for 30-40 years. Look at how average MD has been since 2004 and look at their attendance #'s, they're routinely in the top 10. Coach K routinely says playing at Maryland is the toughest place to play in the country. I'm not dissing PITT's home court advantage because I know it's awesome. I just happen to know that Maryland has done it for a lot longer.

Have you've been to the Comcast Center? I've been there and I have no problem saying it is nicer and that is saying something because the Pete is nice. The space seems to have been used better for whatever reason. Not to mention you can actually find decent parking nearby.

Go and check attendance #'s for the last 10 years. They've had some awfully average seasons and they've consistently been in the top 10.

    2012 - 22
    2011 - 14
    2010 - 7
    2009 - 7
    2008 - 6
    2007 - 8
    2006 - 6
    2005 - 6
    2004 - 5
    2003 - 5

They've been a top 10 team (8.6avg) for the past 10 years. That's insane for how average they've been. Go back and look at all of those top 10 attendance leaders during that time frame, outside of New Mexico, almost everyone has had incredible basketball success during that time unlike Maryland. To me that shows an incredibly loyal fanbase.

PITT's facilities are seriously overblown. The reason their hyped up is because how bad they were before. But, they don't compare to the heavyweights. They are super nice and they don't hurt us in recruiting like they once did, but they are way overblown in the 412.

Outside of having a more steady fanbase, they're located in one of the top 5 traditional hotbeds in the country. WPA probably doesn't make the top 50.
