Expected starters? Depth chart? Position battles?

  • At this point, do any of you guys know what the two-deep is going to look like?

I'm excited to see guys like Donald, Thomas, KK Smith, Price, etc. I assume they're all locks to start .. no?

    Pitt0008mmd

  • on defense it looks like
line: ezell, kk, ad, murphy with backups clemmings, smith, lippert, hale.

backers: thomas, gordon, grigsby with backups williams, trebitz, price

dbs: williams, holley, tags, pitts with backups christian, vinopal, hendricks, carrington.

    offense is pretty straitforward

  • It kills me that Clemmings is a backup still .. along with Lippert and Hale. Stars mean so little.

But i wasn't aware that Price would be on the bench. Are you sure about that? Grigbsy? Who the heck is that?

And i have a feeling Vinopal is going to make the starting roster. Holley and WIlliams are locks but Tags and Pitts can't possibly be locks .. right? Tags has a lot of heart but Christian is talented kid. It's an open competition i'd like to think. Although I wasn't paying much attention in the spring.

  • actually, recently in 11 on 11, Ezell and Clemmings have been the starting ends with Murphy on second team for a lot of the reps.

    Steve Flinn

  • We're pretty stacked on defense in my honest opinion. PLEASE GOD NO INJURIES!!! PLEASE THIS ONCE LET US NOT BE CURSED!!!

    Pitt0008mmd

  • Nicholas Grigsby red-shirted last year (at least I'm pretty sure he did). He's an impressive looking linebacker. In his video, he doesn't just tackle people, he strikes them. Looks quick and athletic.

With E. Williams, Todd Thomas, E. Price and Grigsby - we have a very athletic set of outside backers. Hopefully that translates into big plays.

    Go Pitt.

Where did you come up with this? It's contrary to the camp reports.

Cut him some slack .. he's a basketball guy from TOS. He's still got some jet lag from the transition to the REAL pitt message board.

In all seriousness, maybe he's a seer.

well, most of it was what ive been hearing from camp. some of it was gut feeling. some guys that i havent seen mentioned at all so far at camp are vinopal and murphy, so i went with my gut. could be wrong. it seems like vinopal and tags are pretty much interchangeable and pitts has been taking almost all of the first string reps so far. one side note that im interested in... if pitts starting line is ezell, kk, murphy, ad, clemmings, thats be roughly an average weight of 290 lbs across the line. thats sec type beef. sadly, they dont have sec depth or experience

for a football guy i find it interesting that you dont know who nick grigsby is, lol... also, ive never posted on scout or rivals

  • I thiink the two deep will also be a little more clear after they put the pads on and play in saturday's scrimmage. They are really shuffling players in and out during the 11 on 11's right now

C'mon dude .. I don't follow all these kids we bring in. I know the ones that matter .. Shell, Voytik .. and then some others I find to be intriguing. The Nick Grigsbys of the world are gonna need to find my eyeballs on saturday.

And just messin' about the basketball stuff. haha .. however I did have you pegged as someone projecting the lineup. I kinda figured. So here's my wish list:

    DT: Ezell, KK
    DE: Donald, Clemmings
    LB: Thomas, E Williams, Price
    CB: K Williams, L Pitts
    S: Holley, Vinopal

  • IMO - we should be running a 3-4 or 3-3-5 due to our personnel. Get the best 11 players on the field and go to work.

Would you say our LBs are our greatest asset? I see Holley, K-Williams, Price and Donald as the best we got. Fairly well balanced overall IMO. Maybe it's not like having Romeus and Sheard out there but there is enough talent to make any scheme work. Anyone disagree?

    Pitt0008mmd

  • lol the ones that matter? they all matter. grigsby was a 4 star linebacker and dave huxtable said hes one of the best athletes hes ever been around.

They all matter relatively speaking. How many never set foot on campus? How many don't make the grade or sit the bench for 5 years? I try not to make this my life. I don't follow twitter accounts or live close enough to get into the high school stuff. Did i follow Shell's record breaking HS career? Did I watch Voytik compete in the ESPN Elite 11? You bet. Are you taking it as I don't think they matter AT ALL? Because that's a little extreme.

According to ESPN the kid had a 78 rating .. 3 stars .. and offers from some average schools.

If he's cracking the starting lineup then he'll matter a hell of a lot more. Thanks for raising some LB awareness. Ya learn something new every day.

We have the most overall talent in the secondary, and it is not even close.

  • Williams, Holley, Vinopal, Hendricks, Tags are proven talents .. so damn nice to be excited about defense again. Gotta give some credit to HCTG. He wasn't afraid to make personnel changes and he made some dandy moves .. really set us up nicely. Kinda strange because he's offensive guy .. well .. he certainly was offensive!

Though .. is it such a wide margin in favor of the secondary? The DL is stacked, no? We got beef in the middle .. and underrated guys on the edge .. Donald will be better than his predecessors IMO.

Grigsby is a 4* / 16th ranked OLB (15th ranked Ohio HS player) on Rivals which IMO is the toughest recruiting site when it comes to stars and rankings. He's 6'1" and put on 20 lbs over his redshirt year to get up to 220. He averaged >10 tackles per game in his SR HS year with four sacks.

Take a look at his full offer sheet linked below. There are some good schools listed on there and I wouldn't call Michigan average.

This kid is a good one and will be a starter sooner rather than later.
