all we can do now is hope for the best. I think bob was on to something when he mentioned tom bradley. I think the john palermo hiring was as much to have an experienced veteran who has been a coach at major levels of competition here to help house as it was his actual coaching ability. I think the hire for dc is really weak on paper. I will not say he cant be successful but as of right now its a complete dud. Chryst realizes that house has minimal experience so he hired palermo to be a mentor with his experiences to guide him. If pitt hires a veteran db coach i think that will further cement this theory. i like the palermo hire and i think if chryst hires a good db coach it will serve as some damage control for the hiring of house. i know most defensive coordinators are not out on the road recruiting but i think house needs to be. He was one of pitts better recruiters this year so i think he needs to continue with that. i know this post is just a bunch of rambling (not unlike pitts program) but im sort of at a loss for words
the problem with the house hire is this............the defensive staff consists of all relative noobs and none of them are proven coaches on this level..........Haering, Brechterfield, and house as the DC. So they absolutely needed to hire a seasoned coach to help out.
Im now wondering if they'll even hire a DB coach and simply let Poteat work with them and have House be DC and DB coach.. Afterall, this is the Bargain basement program.
A "Real PITT MAN"............get off my porch!
Poteat was explicitly named to coach cornerbacks, and House is only doing safeties, so you're spot-on. At least Hank has two years' experience as a DB coach at low levels. Spring ball will be very illustrative in terms of figuring out how this all fits together. It almost seems like Palermo will be a roving instructor like what one sees at spring training.
Definitely unorthodox. Could be cool, especially if Palermo is a pass-rush-coordinator sort of guy.
This may well work out but compared to our competition in the ACC, this staff is a complete joke on the defensive side of the ball. I just did a quick scan of Dukes, NC's and UVA's DC's and they guys they have have a ton of prior experience. I also dont know of any school that leaves a DB position open and hires a GA to effectively be the DB coach.
Is pitt really in that bad of shape financially that they cant afford to hire a DB coach and promote a green kid to the DC posiiton?
I really hope Im wrong and this all works out. I'll add that sometimes experience is over rated as its more about ability than resumes. BUt generally speaking this really doesnt look very good at first blush.
That's the really interesting thing: this is a completely different institutionalization. This just isn't the normal hierarchical structure. That raises two related questions:
1. Does this represent an innovation?
2. Was the change institutional first and the a matter of filling the offices, or was the structure made after deciding on which bodies are the best available?
i should add that i like poteat being on the staff. i think he could be a very engram-like coach and recruiter but hes an unknown.
Clearly I dont think this is innovation. This is making the best of a bad situation (ie botching the DC hire for whatever reason.........$$$)..
OF course the old saying "necessity/desparation is the mother of invention............" may apply here.
The reality is none of us really know how good of a coach house is or anyone on the defensive side of the ball. THere also dont appear to be too many people close enough to get "unfiltered" opinons on the cat. So it is what it is. TIme will tell if this was a stroke of genius or just more Pitt being Pitt.
ageed but why limit him to GA? He cant recruit on the road. I suspect he may get promoted to DB coach before the season starts.
And who's leaving? Inoke?
yup forgot theres no room left at the inn with the addition of palermo
