Just wanted to be the first to say that in the wake of House's promotion.
At least we've moved on from
"We Fired Walt For This?!"
Him leaving was the worst thing, I think, for the program.
I really thought he was doing and would continue to do a great job.
If winning was easy even losers would do it.
I think you're setting yourself up with that photo on here.
I think him coming was the worse thing that happened to Pitt, that was the time we had a chance to really make a commitment to build the program and all we did was stay mediocre with over rated recruiting for 6 more years, Wanny was not the guy at the time to bring in, he was less than big time his whole career before and even less than less since leaving Pitt. His in game decisions were mind boggling at times , but hey!!!We are Pitt.
Agreed, I would be more comfortable if Wanny would put his ego in check and come back to the University he loves as a Defensive Coordinator. He could then help clean up the mess he left.
Sports - granted you are new on the board and thanks for being here and chipping in but my OP was dripping with sarcasm as everyone else on here knows.
As to DW returning to PITT - I don't think that will ever happen especially as a subordinate to the position he held for six years.
Some fans have floated the idea around that he'd make a good AD and I just don't see that either.
I generally supported DW but he drove me crazy with his conservative approach in defense. As Reef pointed out he's not co ing back for a number of reasons but even if that were not the case I'm not a big fan of his defensive philosophy
I think DW could have had success as a HC if he could have hired aggressive coordinators and stepped out of the way. His role as ambassador and closer on recruiting would have been valuable I think his best days as a DC are behind. Him
A "Real PITT MAN"............get off my porch!
What "mess" did he leave?
Oh well, I think he was doing a really good job at Pitt. I believe Pitt has some serious momentum while he was the coach and was able to bring in a good amount of quality players. He certainly wasn't Nick Saban, but considering where the program was when he left I'd say he did a very nice job. I think there was significant excitement the last three years he was there ... those expectations were a good thing.
Not directed at rkoh, but who would you have gotten that would have been better.
If anything, I'd say talent.
I'm not touching the "mess/no mess" issue with a ten foot pole - or an eight foot Hungarian.
Steel - was there really that much talent left over for the 2011 team? I wouldn't say the OL had much talent - lots of hype maybe but not great talent. We all know about the QB situation. Graham at RB was a nice thing.
Max Gruder was our leading tackler by far - he was an average talent. Donald and Chas were good DL but the rest IMO were not too much better than other team's DL players - Donald stood out though I guess.
He was not going to get the team much further and he was a polarizing personality. Lost the big games and could not develop or attract an actual QB which is what has hurt this team since.
I liked the hire and he had his chance it was time to move on. Just because the subsequent hiring process was a total and utter failure doesnt mean he was a great coach.
True, fan's thoughts about DW's tenure have become somewhat rose colored given the two years we have had since his firing. You can't deny that he had those winning seasons though...
Others disagree but I've a feeling things weren't going to get much better had he been retained anyway.
By no means were we stocked with talent. But, I believe we were picked first or second in the conference so other coaches valued our talent. Second, a whole class left so who knows how much "talent" was there.
I believe the issue raised by Steel was the talent that DW left. He would have had a pretty good recruiting class for 2011 though.
I took Steel's comment as the talent left might be considered the only mess that he left.
I know, I thought I addressed that. We weren't Alabama but there was enough taken here and there would be more here had we not bungled the search for his replacement.
dave has not been offered any head coaching opportunities since he left pitt. what does that tell you?
That happens a lot. And you don't know what he has turned down behind the scenes. I am not even defending Dave people blame Him for entirely too much.
point 2 is true. let's just say he's not received any serious offers. the guy was coaching lb's in buffalo after he left. that's no big deal but there is no doubt dave would have taken a real offer to be a HC somewhere.
Meh, he's also quite a bit older than he was when he took the Pitt job. He did a disappointing enough job here that we need not quibble about what he's done since.
Tells me that he'd rather be the assistant HC/DC/LB coach for the Bills and the ST coach for the Bucs instead.
The guy was going to finish his contract at Pitt in 2014 and retire.
Huh, usually only God gets a capitalized "Him".
Very interesting ...
I don't blame DW for anything that didn't happen on his watch. Every time any HC leaves there is a debate about how much talent is left on the roster. I think that the talent on the 2011 team was adequate for a 7-8 win season in anyone's hands but Graham.
However, the talent Chryst has to work with this season is a different story.
