Dummy or smarter than he looked?
I'm starting to wonder if ole snake oil smelled a rat and high tailed it out of dodge. He was losing some coaches to Rich Rod and needed to replace them. Hmmmmm.
Absolutely....Whether we didn't pay for a dc or none wanted to come here the point remains. Until Steve Pederson is gone this football program will be a lost cause.
SP may not be the greatest AD out there, but outside a very small window in the 70s and 80s Pitt football has been extremely mediocre. So that leads me to ask, who will y'all blame when the team continues to stink after SP is gone?
If he runs the program the same way Steve does, then the new AD.
If the new AD comes in and embraces tradition, reaches out to the fans for suggestions and gives a damn what they want, asks for help from the past Pitt greats to bring back Pitt, urges the new Chancellor to open the wallet for coaches etc, then the blame falls on the fans for not helping fund the program.
In those 30 years of puke no other AD's had a span of 6 coaches in 2 years, a coach arrested, a coach leave after one year with a text, been exiled from the latest coaching search etc. If you really look at without being contrarian, this is the most embarrassing 3-4 years in Pitt's football history. Couple that with an average men's basketball team and a woman's team which has lost over 30 conference games in a row and you got a total poo pot.
You're right. It's cheapness that breads the mediocrity, and incompetence compounds the issue.
When a football program is operating at $5mil profit per year and that P&L is subsequently destroyed, someone should be held responsible.
It takes roughly 1,000 - 1,500 season tickets to cover the extra money it would've taken to hire someone like Austin. Everyone would be happy and excited. A good schedule coming up next year, PC in his second year, and a well thought of Pitt alum / super bowl champ coach coming in to run the defense.
No vision, no business acumen, and basically no clue.
Matt House could very well end up being a very good coach. Taking this long and then naming him the DC does not bring confidence to a fan base though. It makes it look like either 1. They tried to bring in someone and nobody wanted the job or 2. They wanted someone else but Pitt would not pony up the cash to bring in the DC that Chryst wanted. Either way, the search and end result does not inspire confidence. I get the same feel at times with Pitt that I do with the Pirates. They will not be successful until the people at the top are committed to doing what is needed to win games. Penny pinching with coaches is not the way to go about putting together the best possible staff to win games. Everyone will say they want to win. Their actions are what prove it though and the actions Pitt makes from the Chancellor and AD down tells me that they are not that serious about winning.
I've made this very comment before. I don't like using a snake as a reference but he did make mention that there were issues with the admin at Pitt. Now I would dismiss that statement if we hasn't seen all the other things go on that lend credence to it
I'm just not sure how much is smiley and how much is being cheep. I could well be that smiley being the buffoon he is has taken a directive to an extreme. In other words he's taken the easy way out to improving the departments finances by simply cutting salaries. There are two levers one is revenu and the other is costs. Most people that lack vision over use the cost lever
I also think he may be over compensating for the financial cluster mess he created when he fired DW. When your still paying guys that.no longer work for you you tend to have less resources.
Either way frauddy probably saw the constraints he was under and decided to bail
A "Real PITT MAN"............get off my porch!
Let me clarify that the rat wasn't specifically targeted Smiley, more the lack of commitment or sense of what it takes to be successful. Although, SP fits the rat moniker well so I can understand references to stevo.
I said this in the wake of Fraudy's departure. Forget Todd Graham's character for a minute.
Walt was not a Pederson fan, DW was not a Pederson fan, Fraudy was not a Pederson fan and now we have heard that HCPC is not a Pederson fan. Do we blame each of these coaches who have all worked for other college and pro teams? Or do we blame the piece of trash that we have seen crap on our fanbase over and over and make bad hire after bad hire?
Granted, Nordy is also to blame for not producing the funds. But at this time there is no excuse because in 2013-2014 athletic year we will see a significant increase in athletic revenue from the ACC. Not only that, but our home schedule will be the most attractive in decades and we will sell tickets at Heinz purely on this fact alone. So to not be investing money into football is utterly ridiculous, because the fact is that FOOTBALL is making most of that revenue increase!!!!

NB: we're also responsible for the lack of funds. I AM POOR I CAN ONLY GIVE SO MUCH
Johnny Majors II did just that. How did that work out?
you can't be serious? johnny was given nothing. no facilities, no budget, a rundown stadium, a fledging big east football conference with no tv deal, you name it.
you are comparing that to Pitt in the ACC in 2013?
you gotta be joking.
When was Johnny Majors AD? I must have missed that.
If I'm being contrary you are being overly myopic especially when you call the basketball team average. While I agree Pitt needs more post season success, they are hardly average. Missing one tournament in the last 11 years and winning more than 20 games every year since 2000 does not make a program average. This particular team is not average either. They're a tourney team that, with the right matchups, will be a Sweet 16 team.
For reference, here are some other marquee teams and the last season they won less than 20 games:
Yes, Pitt needs to win in March. But they aren't average.
I won't disagree with the mishandling of the post-Wanny coaching situation. But based on my lifetime as a Pitt fan, the norm has been bumbling, low attendance, and poor donations. It's the school, not the AD.
It's incredible that we can produce the fb. recruiting class we just did when you consider the Heinz unfilled seats and atmosphere. If I'm a kid and I go see Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama then look at Pitt, it's obvious I'm not going to be a Panther. Saturdays in so many other football schools are a religious experience.
Our alumni suck. Many years ago I tried to raise money for Pitt by making calls to successful alumni. The responses I got were sickening. Yinzer commuter kids whom Pitt turned into highly paid professionals and businessmen had become Prince Charles in their own minds. Many were embarrassed that they'd gone to Pitt and wanted and expected their children to go to Ivy league schools, Swathmore, Amherst and Wesleyan.
It hurts to say this, believe me.
Kayz, do you find that folks in the Washington community are the same way? It seems like a similar situation: highly ranked public school with some variance in what's good (medicine) and what's not as good (liberal-artsy things) in an urban environment with competition from pro teams. I know UDub has a crazy game-day atmosphere when things are good, but maybe the down times aren't as awesome.
Anyway, it just seems like a fair comparison.
Come out to aUDub fb. game. It's a tremendous atmosphere with 70,000 plus even in a losing season. It's quite picturesque, on Lake Washington with many fans sailing to the game. When the Huskies score or get a key turnover the place shakes and roars.
The best atmosphere I've seen at a Pitt fb. game in the last 10 years(on tv) was the game with Cincy to close out our season. With the snow falling and the place packed and a BCS spot on the line, electricity in the air, we blew the big lead. Pitt fb. historians will point to that game as a turning point for Wanny's tenure and the future of Pittfb.
On another note: I was watching this basketball game on ESPN in which the home team was up 19-3 after 10 minutes. The game was played in a venue which had seen the home team win 12 of 13 games played there against top 10 teams. This time the home team ended up losing by 9. Armon Binns lives.

When did HCPC say he isn't a SP fan?
I've been away for work for the last 2-3 weeks.
Divorced, getting fit and trying to keep my head above water
This x100. Everyone blames Pederson for attendance and it's simply not true. It's hands-down, 100% the alumni. Look no further than October 2006. They had a Pitt man as head coach. They had Jeff Long (aka NOT Steve Pederson) as AD. The team was 6-1 (2-0) heading into a huge game against undefeated Rutgers. The attendance for that game: 49,620. Flat out embarrassing.
Was it 49,620 fans in the stadium or was it 25,000 fans in the stadium with 49,620 announced? SP has taken these attendance shenanigans to all time heights.
Big difference, because a real 49k is a pretty good crowd. The Pitt fans who lap up these bogus numbers, and think 10s of thousands of people hang out in the bathroom or in concession lines, would think it was a sellout.
We didn't have one "announced" crowd that big last year and probably averaged less than 30k real butts in seats.
Point is, don't go by announced numbers. Yes, the crowds were lean early in the DW years, but last year was the worst I can remember at Heinz.
Don't forget that Long jacked up the donations too, which initially hurt attendance.
For an FBS school in a BCS conference, an announced attendance of under 50K for a huge game is flat out embarrassing. So it still goes back to the alumni IMO.
These alumni are continuously served crap sammiches like Matt House as DC. I don't blame Pitt fans for not going.
I'm surprised at how many actually show up after being kicked in the nuts for so long. Me included, although I'm nearing my breaking point.....
If the fans aren't buying what SP and the rest of the admin is selling, you can't blame the customers. When it comes to Pitt athletics, its been a study in incompetence for decades. SP isn't the problem. He's just the lightning rod perched atop the problem.
Once again, we're talking a game in 2006 where a 6-1 Pitt team was going against a 6-0 opponent. Pitt's coach was Dave Wannstedt, a guy who all Pitt alumni wanted to be the head coach at the time. Attendance: < 50K. I must not be looking at the menu closely enough b/c I don't see that particular "crap sammich" listed. It sounds more like an agenda-driven excuse to me.
I fairness, it wasn't my agenda. My retort is based more your blaming of alumni.
Either way, last year was the worst year ever for Pitt football attendance at Heinz.
There was an opportunity, with a good schedule, to create some excitement with a name hire and sell some tickets.
1,500 extra season tickets sold likely pays for Austin. Do you think there would be countless threads on every Pitt board bitching about how uncommitted and cheap the Pitt administration is?
Think about that and tell me if which option is going to sell more tickets.
