First, let me state that I have been impressed by Matt House. I think he is one of those young, aggressive-minded coaches both in scheme, attitude, and in terms of recruiting. He (and Engram) were the hard-workers in the trenches for our 2013 recruiting class, often spending consecutive days at High Schools and faraway states to secure interest and subsequent committments. He also did a really good job w/ our secondary and continued the development of Pitts and Williams and the safeties, particularly Hendricks. We should do whatever we can to keep him, *within reason*.
Promoting him to Defensive Coordinator - based on his experience and one years time under Chryst - is a mistake. Period. Even if you believe in his ability to be a successful D1 defensive coordinator (and, in time, I do too), you don't hire him now. He's not ready. He's a wild card, a lottery ticket, a leap of faith hire that could go right and could go abysmally wrong. Unlike some people, I'm not going to judge him on the Ole Miss game. That's anecdotal and only one game. You hire (or don't hire) based on a body of work, an extensive analysis of his years in football. Based both on that review and our standing as an ACC football program, you simply don't take these leaps of faith, especially going into a new conference w/ new and bigger challenges awaiting us. Prudence would dictate that you hire an experienced guy (if you can't get young *and* experienced) to groom him (if you feel he is the future) for a couple of years before transitioning him to the DC position. Let him learn firsthand about calling defenses, let him familiarize himself w/ this level of football and these ACC teams, let him be in the fire for a couple of years - learning from success and failure. You don't just make him a head guy because you like his potential. Potential *plus* results is why you hire a guy at this level and at this capacity. He simply doesn't have a track record of success to make an educated decision upon. He just doesn't.
So, what we have, is a head coach that has so much confidence in his ability to forecast who will be a great DC based on one-year of being around him and literally nothing else. Chryst *could* be right. House *could* be special. House *could* carry over his work and energy towards recruiting and coaching DBs and make an excellent DC. But, those traits are different than the traits a DC needs. He needs composure, an ability to fall back on experience, years of calling plays, years of understanding offensive schemes. House doesn't have these. House can't fall back on experience. House can only fall back on energy and passion. That's not enough. Not for a school in our conference at our level.
This is Chryst making a pick out of complete confidence in his ability to prognosticate who *will* be an excellent DC. Not based on anything tangible in terms of a record or resume. This is a leap of faith that isn't necessary (or ideal) in filling this capacity.
Good post Shady...glad I got to read it now, in case it is deleted...
Let's get another receiver to "Foster the People" like AB!
Why would it get deleted? If *this post* gets deleted, then this *message board* becomes a cheerleading site for Pitt. No one should want to be apart of that....
I'm interested to hear this as well.
Or, they waited too long, didn't do their homework, and couldn't hire the guy(s) they wanted so that had to promote someone. It was a poorly conducted search. It's become the norm for Pitt.
I agree, it's a huge gamble and we can only hope it works out.
Anyone still wanna play FSU in game 1?
IT'S PITT FOOTBALL!
Come on folks........some of you act like we are Ohio State. Or even Penn State. The top guys here are alot like Bob Nutting. They certainly want to win, but they don't want to pay the price to win.
Pitt football is just not a priority to the people running this school.
I don't comment on things that none of us possibly could know, like whether SP or the higher-ups dictated this decision. There is nothing credible to say that they did, so, until reported to the contrary, one must assume that Chryst got the guy he wanted.
I disagree pretty strongly w/ your characterization of Nutting, but that's neither here nor there.
From what we know, this wasn't a decision based on money. This was a decision made by a first-time HC who was seemingly impressed enough to hire a guy with no experience at the DC position and limited experience at other capacities. The blame (or hopefully credit) goes with PC, not SP, as much as some of you wish it were otherwise.
Paul Chrst didn't even think enough of House to appoint him as DC for the bowl game. House shared the duties with Haering. Nothing adds up here. Except epic failure and a tight-wad football program.
I'm disappointed that we didn't make a "splash" DC hire, but I've been impressed with Matt House too. My biggest concern is whether Pitt will be able to defend GTs and Navy's option offenses next season. Seems like it would be good to have a DC who has gone against the option - I guess Palermo should be helpful in that respect. I remember Navy option offense chewing up Wanny's defense the first time he face them.
Seriously though - it's not rocket science. Everybody knows what everybody else does - it's all on tape. We'll see how good of a "teacher" House is, but a DC who doesn't "think" like a conventional DC could be good. Hell, we've all seen things from the stands that we know won't work - like having the DBs 10 yards off the line on third and three; like having a linebacker trying to cover a speed slot receiver; and the old "bend-but-don't-break" horse crap. And those calls were coming from "experienced" DCs...
Next season is going to be another tough year for Pitt, no matter who the DC hire was going to be. Pitt will have to fight to win six games against that schedule and with the offense having new starters at all but a few positions.
House is passionate and I bet the players will dig deep to play for him. Will be interesting to see what he can do.
I have not read every post religiously on this board, however, it seems more are deleted if there is an anti-Pitt, or to be more accurate, dissenting opinion from that of the athletic department regarding a matter.
It seems as though certain posters, waltspappy and Wh4p, have been edited or deleted at times for taking what is perceived by some as an overly stated strong opinion.
I had multiple threads deleted because I was happy the bowl game was the last time I'd ever see Tino play in a Pitt uniform. No cursing and nothing derogatory. Just genuine pleasure. I still get happy every time I think about it.
The mod deemed it "unproductive". I wonder if Sal is a mod? I never received a reply as to what the mod deemed "productive" discussion. It would be nice to know.
They haven't, at least not by me. The rules are simple, and posts that violate them are deleted. That said, there are no rules about having strong opinions.
Thanks 80. There is a bit of over moderating going on here. I've been banned/Black-listed/and banned again. The latest ban, I was pardoned by Greg C. I will say I went crazy the one time and actually tried to get kicked off the board. I did!
I do believe your thoughts to be true though. There is a prejudice here. Having said that, Bob L has posted some good thoughts recently that aren't considered PITT administration friendly. Very good posts at that. IKE!
That's cool shruggs...you said you were interested in me expounding more, so I did.
Yessir---I really just wanted to make sure things were on the record and all.
Good lord Gibby- if this guy fails ....Oh my...PC wil have one foot out the door.
we dont have an athletic director. that's his job - to find qualified coaches.
once we get someone qualified in the role - the day Nordy retires - hopefully it will get better.
until then, expect Pitt to botch coaching search after coaching search. they have no freakin clue what they are doing and the results show.
It really is a huge risk and PC is going out on a limb here. Again if he would have done that right away, it would have been a sign that PC has a world of confidence in house. But the fact that he took so long to come to this conclusiion is difficult to reconcile.
As Gibby said, lets hope Pitt doesnt open with FSU with a new green DC and a new QB.
A "Real PITT MAN"............get off my porch!
Hopefully this will turn out like Pitt's amateurish search for a basketball coach & not like Pitt's amateurish search after the firing of Mike Gottfried.
If Pitt played FSU week 1, they'd be playing against a DC who was coaching hs football three years ago and with no experience as a D1 coordinator. PSU did the same thing, albeit more decisively.
Nick- I still hope we open with FSU...5 day weekend in the Burgh for me...( :
Paul Chryst said on an interview on the fan that he would look outside the staff to hire the DC....wonder what changed. And yes I have had several posts deleted, not moderated. IF you post a 5 paragraph retort and one word is $hi* why would you delete the whole post? Who cares though I guess. Thanks though sanctuary.
^^Possibly with The Man himself. I can get Kayser here.
We learned the hard way that editing a word led to....ahem...bad outcomes. Like you yourself said: modding is simple. Break an objective rule, get objectively deleted.
one thing's for certain - the moment matt fails next season - he's going to be taking some serious heat.
not a good spot to be in for a young coach.
he's in way over his head.
Done going down rabbit holes with you.
