I agree smegs I'd also add that we are debating issues that none of us have the facts on. Can anyone on the board really say with any certainty what has been said to recruits? We are debating things that are based on second hand info at best. Anyone whos been around a while in any organization can tell you that info gets greatly distorted outside of those who have direct contact.
In the finaly analysis, PC will be evaluated based on his W/L record over the next 2-3 years. All the rest is noise. It makes for great message board talk I suppose but the nuances of recruiting is not my cup of tea. Nor do I really get into the drama associated with 18 year olds decisions
A "Real PITT MAN"............get off my porch!
Out of 27 commits for 18 of them Pitt was their best offer.
4 were even (bc, virginia, rutgers)
5 had better. Boyd, chapman, johnson, orndorff, jjs.
2 of the 5 likely would not have attended Pitt had psu not received sanctions.
For argument sake.....let's say that's correct. That means Pitt won only 7 "battles" for the 2013 class.
Couple additional points.
1. Mark stoops & Willie taggart are showing what a young aggressive staff can do. Besides gabe Roberts who did Paul chryst secure (targets new to Pitt) after being hired?
2. Several kids didn't know they had offers when they did....orndorff & challingsworth come to mind.
3. Told kids to take time....yet pulled the ship on Gibbs for doing so.
4. Very poor finish to this class.
Having said all that. Ultimately he will be judged on how these recruits perform and it is too early to determine an opinion either way. But, I will argue the warning signs were there.

mark stoops? for real? come on. go back and look at his body of work at AU. he had every opportunity to do well and couldn't. perhaps he's a good salesman and can recruit short-term. good for him. he'll also be fired in 4 years or less, guaranteed.
Do you mean Mark Stoops, who was the DC at Arizona and is now the HC at Kentucky, or Mike Stoops, who was the HC at Arizona?
I didn't once, in my post, say anything about mark stoops head coaching prospects. And, not sure why you would talk about his time at Arizona as something bad....it earned him the dc position at fsu. Perhaps you are confusing him with his brother.
i have no idea. i thought the UK guy was a retread from AU. maybe i'm wrong.
still, i don't want any stoops. i'd change their last name to "dog leash" because they're all chokers when it matters.
Well, if thats the only thing you wanted to comment on....and your information was inaccurate....well great.
my forefathers fought wars for my freedom to drink too much wine on a thursday night and confuse the names of stoops boys whose names start with "m." if you don't like it, move to Canada, ya hippie.
^Fair post. Sounds like the definition of some sort of double standard. We'll tell this kid how we recruit and another something altogether different. We = PITTs coaching staff.
I certainly realize this is everyday business.
I also wanted to remind some of you hard asses on me that I pointed out my own opinion on the boyd/howard/webb situation. To me. it sounds like the inmates running the asylum when PC was telling other kids to go home and not to commit on the spot.To be sure first.
I also said I am in Paul's corner despite some early obvious flaws that just can't be blamed on PITTs recent past. He a novice at being a head coach and it shows. I like the coach and wish him well. < Don't forget to read this last part, as most of you only read what you want to!
22. This isn't an indictment as a whole on PC. This is more of an incident that i have had a little trouble getting over. All the while hoping it isn't a trend. I've stated many times in this thread I'm all for Paul. Although. The DC hire and the finish of this class are very big issues to be resolved.
Oh and I luv you to 22.
WH4P - welcome back.
So - given your research did you expect Paul Chryst, in his 1st year and following PITT's recent history, to do much better than he has done? Or, do you realize the uphill battle he has faced this recruiting season.
It is one thing to have a losing season or two to overcome in recruiting but IMO the coaching instability and the negative off the field publicity impacts just as much.
That is why I feel that even if we have another sub .500 season next year we may just recruit the same or better given that we'll have had a HC in place for two years at that point. The 2014 recruits will be familiar with this staff for the whole recruiting cycle and they'll have an opportunity to chose to be part of Chryst's first full recruiting year or not.
I'm not jumping up and down about this 2013 recruiting class as some are as the only gauge here is how they will actually perform in 2-3 years. We didn't get many blue chip prospects and we lost most of the big recruiting battles we were in. The bulk of Chryst's recruit this year are kids who will have to take some time to develop.
But at the same time I have to be honest and look at this class and think that for all that has transpired at PITT, and given that Chryst has undertaken to make a major overhaul of the roster, it isn't that bad of a class.
Moreover, if a decent proportion of the "no contest" recruits pan out well, then we have a Chryst-is-good-at-finding-kids-that-fit-his-style-regardless-of-hype situation rather than a we-can't-win-head-to-head situation. Enough of the no-contest recruits were offered early enough that that possibility is certainly left open.
I agree bignick....The rest is just white noise from people that are hoping to say "I told you so"
I honestly do not know what a lot of people expected his first year....As Reed said below after all of the crap this program was put through the past three years.....Expecting Chryst to bring in all five and four star studs with a sprinkling of high end three stars is completely unrealistic.....
Or it's people with a differing view point sharing it on a pitt message board sponsored by a recruiting site. Posts like the one above (guessing someones intentions & making inferences) are what stifle discussion. I haven't read 1 person saying we should have gotten all 5 stars etc. Mistakes were made....documented mistakes.....and now they are being discussed.
Screw all this recruiting drivel.... On to more important things.
How's the little one doing?
I think we certainly benefited from what happened at PSU at least a little bit. I am hopeful that when we hire the new DC, they are good at recruiting as well.
Hey Mo. Was up?
Yes this DC hire will definitely be a defining moment in PC's tenure at PITT. Why the long delay?
PITT's defense should be very good next year. Depending on the hire??

spirit posted. This board has been noticeably increasing in participation lately & frankly, this quixotic quest you've been on for over a year now is tiresome.
Take a nap spirit if you're tired and just can't take my posts anymore. Maybe upon wakening you'll be able to offer up some sort of discussion on your own opinions instead of your repeatedly tiresome responses and pile jumping to someone's else opinion. In other words, you're boring!
Prez, you should take this one. You all do know we have a brand new boy in the family. Can we get a pic son?
All I know if PITT offers tomorrow, I'll forge his signature right then and there.. No matter who the coach is.
Eat, sleep, poop, belch, fart, and cry when you need something....... That's the life.
After three kiddies, I've come to understand that there is good reason why adults can't remember any of their time as a baby.
I always wondered what they're thinking when adults give them the go-go-ga-ga talk and act silly.
WH4P - I actually asked those questions in earnest. Perhaps I worded them strongly but I'm curious to hear what you envisioned our recruiting class to be like given the circumstance PITT has gone through the last two years.
I'm not defending Chryst here - you are completely correct in that bonehead mistakes were made by this staff - but as this class has unfolded and seeing what the emphasis has been along the O & D lines and WRs it is ending up better than I thought it would three months ago.
Reed, fair question.
Looking at from a far it appears chryst knocked it out of the park. But looking at it closer i have some questions. First, regarding pitt's "circumstances" they were even worse last year IMHO and I think if Todd Graham had stayed last years class would have blown this one out of the water. We had 2 top prospects and 5 star players that we were the favorite for. (dj & foster). Had psu not received sanctions we would Habe been shut out. Like I said earlier....18 of these kids were really Mac level recruits beside a Pitt offer. We should never recruit like a wake forest, or Boston college, or even nc state. We have an extremely fertile recruiting territory, share facilties with a pro team, and have one of the few true urban campuses on the east coast.
