I would have to think this would be a good thing for Pitt the atmosphere should be electric almost like a Steelers Monday night game with FSU coming to town. Would be big for recruiting
The downside is you have a new starting QB, but so does FSU. You're opening up in a new conference and you come out against arguably one of the top 2-3 teams in the conference.
I hate it. It reminds me way too much of Wanny's first year. There's going to be all this excitement about a new season, a new QB, a new conference, and Pitt will most likely come out and get taken behind the woodshed for three hours. I can't imagine that would be good for team or fan morale.
A horrible idea. I can't believe Pitt would be dumb enough to fall for this trap. Fisher wants to catch us with an untested new OL, new QB, new WR's, and new defense under a new DC. He wants to play in Pgh while the weather is FL weather. And he wants to spank us by a 50 point margin on national tv in front of our WPIAL recruits.
Let's play FSU after PC and staff have had a chance to get everyone on the same page and battle tested. And then let's pray for 20 degrees and snow.let's welcome FSU to Heinz Field Pittsburgh style.
This is the correct link.
I think it would be a great game. We might get our asses kicked but you never know - maybe we turn the tables on the 2012 opener loss to YSU and set a winning tone for this upcoming season.
How good is the FSU DL?
Florida State and Pitt are exploring shifting around their schedules this September to accommodate opening their 2013 season and ACC schedules with a game on Labor Day. Jimbo Fisher made an allusion to the exploration during his Signing Day party Wednesday night.

fsu will have one of if not the best defenses in the country. they have more defensive speed and talent than anybody. also, fsu is replacing quite a bit of coordinators too. but i dont kow whether to like this or not. will be tough
FSU will be breaking in a new qb as well, they could struggle offensively
Anyone notice that the author claimed Pitt and FSU would be permanent cross over rivals? That was an error wasn't it? Or is Pitt really playing FSU annually? Didn't Syracuse get pegged as the "rival" ?
Our crossover will always be um. Hi and welcome to the ACC.
I thought of that ND game in Wanny's first season as well. That was awful! No question, this is a tough draw. Our program is not within shouting distance of FSU in any way, shape or manner and it could get ugly right out of the shute. One thing we do have in our favor will be that early games are notorious for being hard to predict. Anything can happen.
It's really a crap shoot no matter when the game is played. Too many variables to predict.
FSU is going to be a monster of a game no matter when it's played. Nothing is going to change that.
Playing the game right out of the gate would give Pitt all camp to prepare, and who knows what injuries Pitt will be dealing with later in the season.
This reminds me of the story Al Romano tells about the '76 season when the TV guys wanted Pitt v Notre Dame to start the season. Johnny Majors asked Al what he thought about it. Al said something like, "we're going to beat them no matter when we play them, so we might as well play on TV." Or, something along those lines.
Pitt's going to go 12 - 0 next season, so what does it matter who the play and when.
I like it and it is different than ND with Wanny in that back then we were highly ranked and got whopped. Expectations (nationally at least) aren't as high for Pitt. Plus we're both breaking in new QB's and it's the first game for both. I will probably drive up from SC for this one!
YOU GUYS ARE FORGETTING ONE HORRIFIC DETAIL....
This would be on a Monday night, and nobody would go.
Hail to Pitt.
Since the chances of winning this game are, on paper, lower than losing, I'm thinking the possible negatives outweigh the positives for Pitt...and those positives are just some extra cash.
That was an error, now corrected in the story. Syracuse is our permanent crossover.
As for media relations, an excellent idea, heck with FSU I would even drive to the burgh for a Monday Night game. It might damage the Moral of the fan base if we get stomped for a season opener, but It cant be worse than losing to YSU.
I think it will be:
mon 9/2 fsu 8p (no bucs)
sat 9/7 off
sat 9/14 Nova (bucs 7p-nova has opening)
sat 9/21 New Mex (bucs 7p- nm has opening)
I don't like it for the following reasons:
1. I would rather have FSU visit in the cold.
2. Pitt will be a very young team. By my count, 41 or 42 RS or true Fr, depending on Pardner's status. I would much rather ease that young team into the season than throw them directly into the deep end.
3. Pitt starting a new QB vs FSU's defense is a much bigger challenge than vice versa. Again, I'd rather let the new QB get his feet under him.
4. FSU frequently has a let down game mid to late season (see: NCSt 2012). I'd rather take my chances there than the opener.
5. This is the big game that many in the Pittsburgh general population are looking forward to. I'd rather hold their attention than play it early & see that dissipate.

I would not like it at all. I would love the exposure and excitement but Pitt will be breaking in a new QB, a new starting RB, and possibly 3 freshman on the OL (2 red shirt and 1 true freshman). That is not a recipe for success to me in game 1 against FSU.
No, no, no, and no. It's stupid and Pitt has no business agreeing to it. The program isn't ready for this yet. They need to break into the season with Nova. Heck, we couldn't beat YSU last year. Getting pummeled on national TV doesn't nothing for Pitt.
Why do I get the feeling our moronic administration will agree to it....
Uh maybe because their track records says they will................
A "Real PITT MAN"............get off my porch!
Of course PITT should play this game. Take all the old stats and records roll them in a ball and throw them in the garbage. It's prime time.
Too bad this wasn't mentioned before LOI day. PITT may have napped an extra player or two.
Prime time opening weekend of college football is a no brain-er. You guys can all say what you want to about me, but I won't back down from a challenge like this. i see nothing but positives. Fla State couldn't score points with a tenured QB let alone a brand new starter.
I'm excited about the possibility of sitting in a packed Heinz field on opening night.
Heinz Field will not be packed if the game is an 8pm Monday game and Tuesday is a working day.
I guarantee it.
People are vastly overestimating the attractiveness of this game. I've been to plenty of weeknight, prime-time, nationally televised games against Miami, who is a similar opponent, and those were CONFERENCE games, just like this one, sometimes with major implications (in fact, one was for a share of the conference title), and NONE of them were sold out.
Everyone cried and complained about weekday games in the Big East, and now we're acting like it being an ACC game is going to make an iota of difference.
Guess why people don't show up at noon kicks on Saturday? Because they want to sleep in.
Guess why people won't show up at 8pm on Monday? The game won't end til 11 or so. They have to work Tuesday morning. I fail to see the difference.
This is a terrible idea, and for some reason, everyone on here thinks it's going to be a huge deal. It's not. It's going to be a flop. Maybe good for TV ratings, but I can promise there will be less than 65,000 butts in the seats.
Can't argue the future ELS. Guaranteeing the future is not a smart move I'll tell you that. It's labor day weekend. End of summer vacation. I say it comes close to a sell out or actually does sell out. I'll also go against my own advice and predict that there will be more butts in the seats for this game than there were last year for the startling loss to Youngstown State.
It comes down to one simple mindset. Anyone, anytime, anywhere. Double that for conference foes.
If the coaching staff doesn't project that kind of attitude, Pitt never will attract enough great players to move the program back to a level of prominence that I think we all want to achieve.
Good gracious, guys. It's Pitt. We know what the fan base is like; they'll find a reason to bitch regardless of what position in the schedule this game is played.
Strap 'em on ( that's helmets, not the things Blank Stare likes ), tie the laces up and play the game whenever it is scheduled. It seems that Pappy and I agree on this one. Bring it on, kick their butt, and then dare them to come back to Pittsburgh in late November the next time it's our year to host FSU.
The next time FSU comes back to Pittsburgh to play will be at least 6 years away, you will owe FSU a visit in between. No way I play this game first, many site the ND game mistake under Wanny in year one but the we should learn from the mistake when we moved that Utah game up. It was Tino's first game to start and we lost in OT. If that game had been played in October as it was originally scheduled Pitt would have won rather than lose in overtime.
Make FSU come to Pitt in November and freeze those Florida butts, by then whom ever is the QB will have some experience and give us a fighting chance.
NO WAY I MOVE THIS GAME UP TO SEPTEMBER !
I'd say bring'em on. FSU will have to play and themselves like they seem to do every game. It's been a long time since FSU just showed up and stomped people w/ half ass efforts. Being that they have played a 1aa team ever season in the past 5-6 years and when they've played D1 teams they've lost their openers, I'd like our chances early on versus week 8 or 9 when they have knocked the rust off.
