For those of you ( I think there are two who live in Charlottesville on this board ) who have been to the new ( to me ) UVA arena. What's it like? When I lived there they played in an arena that reminded me of WVU's Coliseum, with very steep steps in the upper levels.
I drive by it every day going to work, but haven't been inside. It looks pretty boring on the outside, but supposedly it's very nice. I'm not a fan of the exterior architecture. I caught some of the game tonight. Looked packed and with a fairly large capacity.
Someone else lives here?
There was a post last week where somebody other than you said he lived there, and attended games. I don't remember the name, though.
I live in Charlottesville as well. We have season tickets for UVA because we get them at a discount through my wife's job. The arena is pretty nice but not unlike any other college arena built in the past 10 years. Our seats are pretty high up but there are decent sight lines from most areas of the arena. There are usually a decent # of seats available as well, even for ACC games (although weekend games with rivals get a bit trickier). I only bring that up because if any Pitt fans make the trip it isn't a difficult ticket to get - at least for now. UVA does have alot of young guys in their rotation playing well and getting lots of minutes so I would watch out for them next year and the couple of years after. I have a feeling if UVA stays hot the attendance will start going up.
The one thing I will give them credit for is they really work hard with promotions, entertainment during timeouts/halftime, etc. They make it a fairly kid-friendly event. And the other benefit to going to the basketball games is you don't have to listen to the super-annoying, pretentious auld lang syne cover song UVA fans sing/hold hands/sway together every time the football team scores... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4-sHpwqPPo
I live in Charlottesville too. My wife is a UVA graduate. I have been to the JPJ arena few times and from what I can remember I thought it was a rather large (I think it sits in the neighborhood of 14.5k), but not very intimate. It felt more like sitting at the Verizon center as opposed to the Pete.
I also hate the arm in arm sing and swing after they score a touchdown and I remember the tailgate scene being a real shock when I first moved here.
When I lived there (mid-90's) football tailgates / games looked a lot like the Steeplechase event / wine and cheese party they have at Foxfield.
^ That's more my speed. UNless of course you have a bottle of El Jim.
The downtown area and especially Albemarle county has changed quite a bit since the mid 90's. I can't believe how much it has changed since I moved here in 2001. The distance between DC and Charlottesville seems to become less every day.
Tailgates can be a little stuffy. One of the best things about Pitt moving to the ACC is the fact that Charlottesville is within 3.5 hours of 7 away venues until Maryland leaves.

I live in albemarle county .. walnut creek park is 8 miles down the road. I love this place. It's almost as nice as living in the smoky/blue ridge mountains.
