Blame Miami/FSU

  • in my opinion the ACC wouldn't have near the issues they do if those two former powers would have kept their prowess going once the new ACC was formed in 2004. Both of those programs took a major nose dive and the Big East actually had the better league for the majority of the time from 2004-2011.

    If those two schools carried their old weight, I'm assuming the bargaining power for bowls/playoffs/etc would have been much different.

  • Maybe, but then does the ACC still feel the need to add Pitt and SU last year? Does the SEC look more favorably about duplicating its market space in Florida and snag FSU? Is Maryland still bankrupt and take a B10 invite, or is that nixed because FSU and Miami bring in a little more money? Hard to see how the chain of events unfold in different scenarios.

  • True.. I'm thinking that eventually the ACC would've added 2 more members, not sure if PITT/SU would've been in the mix. But, I think the ACC probably would've had more bargaining power w/ the networks that would've brought more $$ to each team and maybe would've kept schools like MD happy.

  • We likely bring in more money to the conference than any other school. We were elite for a full decade after joining. Where was the rest of the conference? ALL schools have downturns (Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and USC all had them in the 80's and 90's, Alabama pre-Saban, etc.). You're blaming the wrong school(s).

    Here's the thing, you guys have more resources than 90% of the schools in the country in terms of talent in your home state. Miami and FSU fell on their face when this league was remade in 2004. It's not the league was a juggernaut in that time frame.

    You can't blame schools. School don't typically lose on purpose. You could just as easily blame Pitt and Syracuse, undoubtedly the marquee programs following the 2003 raid, for the demise of the Big East.

  • Ultimately, whatever increase in revenue the ACC would've gotten had Miami & FSU delivered on their potential would have been a pittance compared to what the B1G gets from the BTN.

    Therefore, the blame must fall on the ACC for not building its own "network."

    I think that sums it up. But the ACC was also a victim of timing by being the first conference up to negotiate a new contract with ESPN before the bubble really started expanding. They got locked into a long-term lowballed deal in some ways.

    I agree, which is why I hold ESPN to blame for a large portion also.

    Ok, did you even read what I said? Nebraska, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama don't also have more resources than most? Fact remains, FSU is the ACC's biggest television draw even despite our recent down years and while VT performed well after joining, the rest of the ACC pretty much just shit down their pants over the last decade. That's not our fault that nobody stepped up while we were down. All schools see downturns. It's too hard to be #1 (or top 5, as it was) forever. It's not asking too much for others to step up when the guy at the top goes down.

    SpiritOf76 NAILED it! I remember when the ACC was initially discussing their new tv deal with ESPN 3-4 years ago. The BTN had already become a success at that point. Many thought with an ACC footprint from Florida to Maryland and then parts of New England, we'd have a great potential network. Well, Swofford didn't make it happen. Two years go by and we see that the ACC's $12M/team average looks like horseshit and we add you guys and Cuse. It opens the contract back up some and we again hoped an ACCN would be part of the outcome. NOPE! Nothing. So despite selling all of our third tier rights and having contiguous states from Massachusetts to Florida, no tv network.

    The BTN has paid out over $7M/school the last two years.

  • Can't really argue with you trick. I'd be pissed if we were in FSU's shoes too. Friggin Rutgers is going to be making a lot more conference money than FSU. Friggin Rutgers!!!!! That's the worst part of this entire deal.

    I wouldn't be surprised if the B10 tried reaching down south for a few schools. Florida is a big state with a lot of eyeballs.
