You forget how touch and go it was with Sam Young during his career. A lot of promise as a Sophomore, then a step back and disappointing Junior year, only to have a major breakout Senior year. There's a lot of raw talent on Jamie's bball team, as well as among PC's early recruiting efforts.

WHat does that have to do with this thread? Sam Young wasn't the answer. He got us to an elite eight. And further .. his junior year was pretty awesome. That was when he began to display his athleticism on defense with blocking shots as well. But he wasn't a stud that could carry a team in March. And we don't have anyone like that on the team currently .. JJ Moore needed to be that guy and disappeared after the first few games.
The question is .. does the basketball team need D-Wade more than the football team needs Orlando Pace?

Considering one or two big time studs can carry an entire basketball team I would take the big time stud SG. You can get by and game plan to help an average LT. A d wade or even the kid from Lehigh on this years Pitt team could make them a final 4 team. I don't see a stud LT next year getting Pitt into a possible national title game.

Calling Sam Young the "closest" we've had to a go-to guy is way underselling his performance in March his senior year. We don't get to the Sweet 16 without Sam Young's herculean effort in the first half against OK State. Additionally, I don't know how you can call his junior year disappointing. He averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds a game.

This is a good question. I slept on it. My girlfriend was all like "WHO IS HALVY AND WHY DO YOU TALK ABOUT HER IN YOUR SLEEP?"
I conclude that the LT is more important. The question was "bigger need." I think that a functional LT is a "more necessary" condition for success than is a functional 2G. If you don't have a good 2G but you do have a wicked-awesome 5, you can still succeed. Heck, you might be better off if you had a wicked-awesome 1. If you don't have a good LT, your wicked-awesome QB is on his hiney. Your wicked-awesome WR doesn't get the ball any deeper than 5-10 yards downfield because your wicked-awesome QB will be on his hiney soon. Your wicked-awesome RB is full of sadness.
If the question is one of elite 2G versus elite LT, then I'd go with the guard. We really haven't had any elite players in basketball---Sam Young may have been the closest, but I'm talking about elite elite elite elite. Using the draft as a rough, flawed criterion, it becomes quite plain quite quickly that we haven't had a really awesome-sauce guy. And that's fine---I love the players we've had. This isn't a knock on them.

Bigger need?
