Bigger need?

  • The basketball team needing a lights out, create-your-own-shot SG or the fball team needing a pancake-blocking OT?

I'm going with the OT, simply because we will have a new QB and a new starting RB next year.

  • Obviously the basketball team will never do jack without a dominant athletic scorer. Sam Young was the closest we ever came to that. The OL is a unit and coachable. Can't coach someone to be D-Wade.

  • You forget how touch and go it was with Sam Young during his career. A lot of promise as a Sophomore, then a step back and disappointing Junior year, only to have a major breakout Senior year.
There's a lot of raw talent on Jamie's bball team, as well as among PC's early recruiting efforts.

WHat does that have to do with this thread? Sam Young wasn't the answer. He got us to an elite eight. And further .. his junior year was pretty awesome. That was when he began to display his athleticism on defense with blocking shots as well. But he wasn't a stud that could carry a team in March. And we don't have anyone like that on the team currently .. JJ Moore needed to be that guy and disappeared after the first few games.

The question is .. does the basketball team need D-Wade more than the football team needs Orlando Pace?

That's the question that I'm trying to figure out.

I look at it this way, if we had an experienced QB and/or experienced RB then I would agree with you 100%. I know the line works as a team, but that team is only as strong as its weakest member. We will have unproven guys on the line blocking for unproven guys in the backfield.

Looking at the bball team, we do have some experience on offense that can pick up the slack at times. Woodall is becoming a very good scorer (I'd love for him to have 3 more inches), Patterson is a good all-around player, Moore can take over a game at times, etc., so we can survive (and I know that isn't the goal) without the shooter, however we would thrive with one.

I should preface all that with the fact that there is no wrong answer to this question, it's just for thought.

  • Considering one or two big time studs can carry an entire basketball team I would take the big time stud SG. You can get by and game plan to help an average LT. A d wade or even the kid from Lehigh on this years Pitt team could make them a final 4 team. I don't see a stud LT next year getting Pitt into a possible national title game.

And if there is no "right or wrong" answer then what was that^^ looks like the "right" answer to me. biggrin

  • Calling Sam Young the "closest" we've had to a go-to guy is way underselling his performance in March his senior year. We don't get to the Sweet 16 without Sam Young's herculean effort in the first half against OK State. Additionally, I don't know how you can call his junior year disappointing. He averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds a game.

That was my point regarding Sam's junior year .. he was a beast his last two years .. so i hope you aren't addressing me. And he was never D-Wade and his herculean efforts didn't get us to the final four. We've never had a complete stud athlete.

  • Bigger NEED?
Hoops player. If you are just an OT away, you can make up for it by getting a back or te to help block or get fancy with OL schemes.

    Bigger WANT?
OT. pretty much i'm not that concerned with hoops, so why pass on a dominant OT to help out football.

    Bigger IMPACT?
Hoops player. In hoops 1 player can take over a game and win. Hell, we've seen 1 player take over a few NCAA tourny games and win. You're talking about the impact of 1/12 vs 1/85. Or 1/5 vs 1/11 if you are talking about what unit they play on.

I think we're disagreeing a bit over how to define a go-to guy.

What guys would you put in the same category as D-Wade?

  • More variables to scheme with in football, less of a need but more of a luxury.

I don't think there is a sport that has more strategy than american football. I don't think any sport comes remotely close.

Agree, one player can make a huge difference in hoops. Put Ricky Greer on the 2009 Pitt team with Young / Blair / Fields and Pitt wins the national championship.

Put the 2011 version of Kemba Walker on any number of Pitt teams and they would be playing for championships.

  • Not next year but the year after bisnowaty could turn into that stud LT.

Do you think Sam Young was ever as good as Kemba Walker? I'm talking in terms of consistency late in the year as well .. not just one game here or there.

    Sam was dominant at times.

    Pitt0008mmd

  • Sam's last 5 games as a Panther

    31pts vs UCONN
    15pts vs WVU
    32pts vs Oklahoma State
    19pts vs Xavier
    28pts vs Nova

Doesn't looked like he faded at the end of the year.

Absolutely, he was. Walker only scored 16 points in the title game against Butler, so it wasn't like he averaged 30+ppg in the tournament. It's also unfair to compare Walker's tourney run to the 2008-9 season. There was so much more talent in 2008-2009 than there was in 2011.

I don't think the fact that Pitt failed to make the Final Four should diminish Sam's role as a go-to-guy. There are far too many other variables at work determining the outcome of a tournament game. Say Nova only shoots 75% of their FTs and Pitt moves on to face UNC. Does that really make Sam any more of a go-to guy?

  • This is a good question. I slept on it. My girlfriend was all like "WHO IS HALVY AND WHY DO YOU TALK ABOUT HER IN YOUR SLEEP?"

I conclude that the LT is more important. The question was "bigger need." I think that a functional LT is a "more necessary" condition for success than is a functional 2G. If you don't have a good 2G but you do have a wicked-awesome 5, you can still succeed. Heck, you might be better off if you had a wicked-awesome 1. If you don't have a good LT, your wicked-awesome QB is on his hiney. Your wicked-awesome WR doesn't get the ball any deeper than 5-10 yards downfield because your wicked-awesome QB will be on his hiney soon. Your wicked-awesome RB is full of sadness.

If the question is one of elite 2G versus elite LT, then I'd go with the guard. We really haven't had any elite players in basketball---Sam Young may have been the closest, but I'm talking about elite elite elite elite. Using the draft as a rough, flawed criterion, it becomes quite plain quite quickly that we haven't had a really awesome-sauce guy. And that's fine---I love the players we've had. This isn't a knock on them.

    Shruggs,

I think the LT position in CFB is a tad overrated compared to the pros. The caliber of DE/OLB they face is nowhere near the level they see at the next level more times than not. A really good coordinator will often place his best pass rusher on the weakest OL and it kind of nullifies one side of the OL. You can always help a tackle out in the pass game whether he's on the left or right. But, when you have two weak tackles you're extremely limited.

Pass protection is typically determined by the center who usually has the OL slide left or right based on the front. If they are giving odd or even looks in the front it usually determines which way they will step. If you have an elite DE lined up opposite of a so-so tackle, the center and QB need to identify this at the presnap and make the adjustment. This year wasn't pretty all the time, but it was much better than last year where we had free rushers because of the miscuses from Sunday through Thursday w/ last year's staff. IMO, Fraud set this team up for failure because he seemed to look past strengths and tendencies. Just my opinion though.
