BIG STATEMENT: Alvarez on Chryst "Paul is going to stay at Pitt"

  • Barry Alvarez at this morning's press conference on Paul Chryst....

"I asked a very good friend of mine to help Paul get that job."

"I wouldn't feel it would be right to hire him back after I helped him get that job."

"Paul is going to stay at Pitt."

  • I don't care how you interpret it, Alvarez and Chryst both showing some values clearly lacking in other places.

Chryst could end up being the next Hackett or the next Majors, either way, you have to respect the integrity of BA and PC.

  • Ok then, some great news.

That statement should put an end to all the speculation.

  • That's pretty awesome to hear after you see all of the back door deals and sharks in the water in the college football landscape.

  • LOL at this statement.

Alvarez said he will not use a search committee to vet candidates.

"I won't use a search committee," he said. "Most search committees use me."

  • Wow it is nice to know that there are a few good people in the scumbag world of college coaches and administration

  • Alvarez was Pitt's for the taking back in the day. Oh well. No sense dwelling on such things.

Not only that but after we fired Hackett, we had a chance to hire Sherril, who still had 10 years left in him, and J Dennis O'Douchebag would not hire him.

Either way, today we are still wearing the Script playing in a renovated PITT Stadium and Steve Pederson would likely never have been our AD.

PITT blows every good opportunity. Let's hope this latest news is a trend in the other direction.

  • I could not agree more that Alvarez showed character and integrity, what do you expect from a western pa guy?
by the way, I may still be a stooge, but at least I won't have icing on my face for saying chryst was staying.

  • Great to know there are still some decent people in the world involved with NCAA football. This definitely calls for a celebratory mid-afternoon beer, or 2..3...4...12....24.....aldfapdfajpofpukeface

How much more successful could Sherrill have been than Johnny Majors, given the state of the program, facilities, admin support, and what he ended up actually accomplishing at Mississippi State (.500 and 4 years of NCAA probation)? I'm not sure Sherrill, or perhaps anyone, could have made that much of a significant difference at Pitt in 1993.

Pitt wasn't going to touch him with his NCAA baggage anyway, so the point was moot. Although, I know he did have interest, or at least liked the attention.

Funny story, this is when I was a manager with the basketball team, on the road some of the other basketball team managers used to drunk dial Jackie during this period and essentially sweet talk him about coming to Pitt. He seemed to love it, actually.

You think attendance sucks now? Imagine if fans from outside the city still had to bottleneck themselves into Oakland. We might not crack 20,000.

  • It's not just the world of college coaches and administration. It's the entire business world which all you extraverts have created. How many "good people" are among us on this board? How many of us have standards and values and beliefs which we hold greater in importance than indulging our selfish ever-changing (in the heat of the moment) wants and desires? The "good" guys .. the think-first, intrinsically motivated guys .. they are not many and they are becoming less.

I don't buy this. Calipari gets crapped on for no good reason IMO. His vacated final fours had nothing to do with him. He is extremely loyal to the guys he cares about. The one-and-dones are a product of NBA rules, nothing he can control. He takes the best HS players and helps them transition very well to the NBA game.

  • So, now on to the important stuff. Will Pitt wear today's version of the 1980 Script uni for the bowl game, and next season?

    Phaser

  • Will the freaking helmets have stripes? That'd suck if they didn't.

  • Anyone get a reaction from Wisconsin fans? I don't know how I would feel if my AD said he would not hire someone based on his morals an that it would not be right. Mostly because in this crazy dog eats dog world that is college football it is basically seen as a sign of weakness to not hire someone if you think they are the best fit.

Maybe he did not want to hire Chryst or think he was the best option and this was the easy way out?

Do you all think that is fair or unfair?

I think Barry saw the coaching struggles this season, and chose to take the high road in his statement as to why he isn't interviewing HCPC.

If HCPC improves as we all expect, all bets are off if they're looking for a coach in a few years.

Absolutely agree. It is wonderful to see that there are still some administrators and coaches in college football that will do things the right way...with integrity. I'm glad one of them is currently here at Pitt, and from the sounds of it will be staying for some time.
