Pitt recruits look for PIAA gold

Cody Wiercioch looks for title No. 3

The PIAA Class AA/AAA State Wrestling Championships are getting underway this morning with several Pitt recruits taking the mats at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa.

One of the headliners will be Canonsburg (Pa.) Canon McMillan senior Cody Wiercioch at 170-pounds. The Charleroi transfer enters preliminary action with a (37-1) record. His lone loss this season was to consensus No. 1 nationally ranked Chance Marstellar at the Powerade Tournament.

Marstellar has dropped to 160-pounds for the post season. Wiercioch who is heavily favored in the AAA bracket will take on Big Spring junior Cody Siebert (21-5) in his first match of the tournament. Wiercioch is already a two-time state champion, now he looks to add number three.

Southwest Region No. 2 seed Nick Zanetta (32-4) of Keystone Oaks will take on Northwest Region No. 3 seed Dalton Zimmerman (31-8), a sophomore from Brookville in his first bout of the tournament. Zanetta reached the finals last season, suffering a (9-3) loss at the hands of former Derry star Jimmy Gulibon. Gulibon is now a freshman at Penn State.

Another heavily favored wrestler and Panther recruit at 145-pounds is Southeast Region No. 1 seed Mike Racciato (40-0) of Pen Argyl who will take to the mat against Southwest Region No. 1 seed Phil Marra of Burrell. It would take a major upset to keep Racciato off the podium. Racciato will be trying for a rare trifecta and joining an elite group of wrestlers to possibly win three state titles.

Northeast Region No. 1 seed Ryan Solomon (36-0) is considered as close to a lock to win at 195-pounds as one could be. He will battle Southeast Region No. 5 seed Justin Blobe a junior from Saucon Valley in preliminary action. Solomon is a returning champion and is expected to repeat.
