Pitt's athletic department announced Sunday night that the Panthers accepted a bid to play in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama on Jan 5. The Panthers will face Mississippi of the SEC for the first time.
Both teams are coming off big wins with momentum entering the bowl game. Ole Miss (6-6, 3-5 SEC) upset Mississippi State 41-24 in the Egg Bowl to become bowl eligible. Pitt (6-6, 3-4 Big East) beat USF 27-3 to become bowl eligible.
The game is played at Legion Field and will be televised on ESPN at 1 p.m. It marks the third consecutive year that the Panthers will play in the BBVA Compass Bowl but Pitt head coach Paul Chryst could not be happier.
“We’ve been given a great opportunity to play a quality program like Ole Miss,” Chryst said. “I know they finished the season strong and looked impressive in winning the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State. We are appreciative of the City of Birmingham and the BBVA Compass Bowl for giving us the chance to play one more game this season.”
The Panthers will be playing in their 10th bowl since 2000 (13 seasons) and fifth consecutive since 2008. Pitt is 12-16 all-time in bowl games. Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson commented on the Panthers' third trip in a row to the BBVA Compass Bowl.
“As we move another step closer to our future in the Atlantic Coast Conference, we are thrilled to be matched with Mississippi of the Southeastern Conference,” Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said. “While it is unusual to play in the same bowl three years in a row, we are excited to be facing a traditional program like Ole Miss. This game is held in a great football city and our hosts have already discussed giving our team some different experiences on this trip. We are proud of how our team finished the regular season and we’re excited they can play one more game together.”
